While Batman vs Superman and The Avengers: Age of Ultron may have won the Comic-Con 2013 headline battle, when it came to sheer value for money geekage, Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past couldn’t be beat. Not only did we have the panel with that insanely big cast of fan favourite actors, but out of all the big titles there (with the exception of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla), it was also the only film to have a major viral presence.

And not one to lose that viral momentum, Fox have unveiled a new video and some images giving us our first look at everybody’s favourite purple robo-enforcers.

The video comes courtesy of the Trask Industries viral website, which was updated with the following message:

In 1973, Trask Industries introduced the first Sentinel production model, the Mark I. Bolivar Trask’s groundbreaking research in AI, robotics and autonomous ballistic systems laid the foundation for the world’s most capable anti-mutant defense system. Since the program’s inception, we’ve continued to advance our founder’s cause through eight additional generational upgrades and enhancements.

As we celebrate five decades of achievement, we also bid farewell to regular production of the Mark I and shift our efforts to full-time manufacturing of the Mark X — our first complete overhaul of the Sentinel line. These highly anticipated units will combine next-generation nanotechnology and bioweapon breakthroughs, promising an even brighter future for the human race.

Along with the message, these two new images were also released showing off the sentinels in a historical context.

With that video and message celebrating the Sentinel Program’s 50 year anniversary and it stating that the first one was created in 1973, that would mean that the future part of the film’s storyline takes place in about 2023. Which is definitely far enough into the future to have everything fall apart, but not so far that all the actors will be need to be made too old with dodgy makeup.

The only problem though is how that date ties up with the post credits sting in The Wolverine (the details of which I won’t spoil here) because clearly it’s not 2023 in that film yet.

While you’re trying to ponder on that though, I suggest heading over to Trask-Industries.com. These images and vidoe are just the tip of the viral iceberg, as the site is now also boasting a timeline of genetic discoveries leading up to 2020, a biography on the Sentinels’ creator Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), as well as a history of the Sentinel Program and much more.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be time-travelling into cinemas on May 23, 2014.
