Could it be that we’re seeing a new trend in British romantic-comedies: the gimmicky rom-com? I Give It a Year was like the “anti-rom-com rom-com”, and now Richard “Love Actually” Curtis is bringing us the “time-travelling rom-com” with About Time.

Ok yes, we already had The Time Traveller’s Wife, but that was more rom-drama than rom-com. It also didn’t feature Bill Nighy dropping a hilarious F-bomb or Domnall Gleeson talking about oral sex with his girlfriend’s parents – oh, those wacky Brits – as in this new trailer.

At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time…

The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life—so he decides to make his world a better place…by getting a girlfriend (Rachel McAdams). Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think.

With the aforementioned Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill to his credit, Richard Curtis is basically a genre unto himself. His films have created the mold for the more risque Brit Rom-Com, and About Time looks like it could take its place among those fan favourites quite nicely. This is actually a pretty big deal, as the time travelling tale could be the last time we see Curtis behind the camera.

Speaking to Empire magazine (via The Guardian), Curtis – who has only directed 3 films, but has had a huge contribution as a comedy writer – revealed that with About Time saying everything he wants to say, this may just be it for him in the director’s chair.

“I waited a while in order to write [About Time]. This probably will be the last film I will direct.”

“I don’t know. Just a feeling … just a feeling. It feels like a summing up to me. We’ll see how things turn out.”

Curtis doesn’t specify whether this just means the he’ll no longer be directing, or whether he’ll be calling it quits on his writing as well. If so, he’ll certainly be leaving behind a worthy enough legacy that includes Blackadder, Not the Nine O’Clock News, Mr. Bean, Bridget Jones’ Diary, War Horse and much more.

About Time – hopefully not Curtis’ last work – will be hitting US theatres on 1 November 2013, before going back in time to be first be released in UK cinemas on 8 August, 2013.
