THE LONE RANGER

If there’s was one movie that I was looking forward to this year, it was The Lone Ranger. I mean, on paper the film had everything going for it. A massive budget, Gore Verbinski directing a Western and a great cast. So where did it all go wrong?

By universal consensus, The Lone Ranger is a bloated film that doesn’t know what it wants to be, filled with tropes and running for way too long. That movie has also bombed badly at the box office. And it’s all thanks to Kervyn.

Well, him and dozens more reviewers and critics. Opinion has been pretty much anything but mixed, with the majority of critics slamming the film. And director Gore Verbinski, stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are none too happy about all this here negative emotion. In fact, they believe that thanks to the troubled production of that film, critics wanted the film to be bad. Man, I never knew that we had the power to cost studios millions of dollars. Us critics are like super-villains!

Yahoo! Movies UK & Ireland put together a three-minute compilation of the quartet wanting to hang critics at high noon:

Here’s the thing though: No matter how bad the film actually is, the folks involved in it are obligated to actually say something nice about the movie. Hell, they’ve got a stake in the success of the film, whether it be a share of the profits or having a career left alive for the sequels. They’ve got to promote the film as best as they can.

And as reviewers, we can only be honest. Sure, it’s all opinion. But at the end of the day, folks trust certain opinions. And we’ve got a job to be as impartial as possible. We’re not railing against a film because we hate it. We’re doing it because we care. And we want Hollywood to succeed.

What about you though? What did you think about the Lone Ranger?

  1. I really enjoyed the film. It was genuinely fun to watch, but I didn’t go into the cinema expecting anything. It’s a very Depp spin on the genre, but I felt it worked. The Lone Ranger did a solid enough job – it was believable to me. I honestly don’t think anyone else could have pulled off the spirit horse scenes but Depp – laughed a lot and was worth the money I paid.

I do honestly think that reviewers are looking for more than just “fun factor” – but that should never be lost in any review. And let’s not forget that being critical of critics itself isn’t without its own merit. For “what is a critic if not a person who reads [or watches] too quickly, arrogantly, but never wisely?” (David Mitchell, 2004)

Saw clips of it and it doesn’t impress much…The whole Depp/Sparrow crazy acting is worn out I reckon and seems cliche and forced these days…
I’d still watch it if they showed it on SABC perhaps…:)

The only impact critics had on my opinion was making me feel glad I never went to go watch it. I never paid attention to them before it was released, so I don’t even know anything about the “troubled production” they mention. I based my decision on the trailers – and they were not appealing. Which is sad because I really enjoyed The Lone Ranger as a kid & love the western genre.

Blaming the critic for poor performance is as much use as shooting the messenger for bad news.

I’ll reserve judgment until I see the movie. Critics have often been wrong as well.
