ender's game

I’m starting to think that I may have been born in the wrong century. Because in the future, kids get to relive the best bits from Starship Troopers, only with even better technology. Children are the future, a thought that I’ve always feared (Look at the healthy young buggers, strutting on my lawn), but they’re all that stands between mankind and an extinction level event hitting Earth harder than a P-Klap from the heavens.

And in Ender’s Game, this ain’t no, erm, game.

In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham, all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin, a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is recruited to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

I’ve got to say, even if it doesn’t deliver on a story level, Ender’s Game may just be the most beautiful looking film of the year. Those special effects are looking gorgeous, and played against the backdrop of a young boy thrust into a war that will determine the fate of all mankind, this could be the blockbuster of the year.

Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Nonso Anozie and Stevie Ray Dillmore, with Gavin Hood directing. It’ll be tearing through hyperspace on November 1.
