Saoirse Ronan is very talented young lady. Unfortunately, one of those talents is not always picking the best scripts (The Host come on down!). Based on this first trailer, the verdict is still out on whether or not her newest project, How I Live Now, is another one of those bad choices.

She does have the benefit of this speculative-sci-fi-post-apocalyptic-romantic-drama-thriller *BREATHE* being based on an award winning novel and being helmed by Kevin Macdonald, the Oscar winning director behind The Last King of Scotland, State of Play and One Day in September, though.

Set in the near-future UK, Saoirse Ronan plays Daisy, an American teenager sent to stay with relatives in the English countryside. Initially withdrawn and alienated, she begins to warm up to her charming surroundings, and strikes up a romance with the handsome Edmund (George MacKay). But on the fringes of their idyllic summer days are tense news reports of an escalating conflict in Europe. As the UK falls into a violent, chaotic military state, Daisy finds herself hiding and fighting to survive. Based on the award-winning novel by Meg Rosoff.

Two things: 1) The change in tone in this trailer is rather jarring. If the same holds true for the film, this could be either a good or bad thing, depending on how well Macdonald handles it by not over-playing either portion too much. 2) Whoever decided that that Pop-Rock song would be a good choice for the trailers final section needs to be publicly flogged. Preferably with a sock full of pennies.

This could turn out good, but it all depends just how schmaltzy the romantic bits get. Keep it less Mills & Boon and this could just be a winner.

How I Live Now drops the bomb on theatres on November 8, 2013.
