Monday Box Office Report – It's a win for Vin

After several months of non-stop blockbusters and summer tent-pole movies, we’re entering the itis phase of the year after that visual feast for the eyes. The box office is seeing smaller takes every single weekend, with the majority of new releases struggling to break through the $20 million debut mark.

Vin Diesel’s latest film was no stranger to this fact. But it was still a king at the end of the day.

Making just over $18 million over the weekend, Riddick didn’t stray too far from predictions and expectations. That total was higher than the first outing of the anti-hero, Pitch Black, but way lower than the Chronicles of Riddick which debuted back in 2004. Mind you though, that film had a far bigger budget and expectations to go with it, and proved to be a flop.

Still, this incarnation of Riddick looks set to be a decent money-earner that’ll spend a couple of weeks at the box office, and star Vin Diesel and director David Twohy will most likely walk out with grins on their faces. Here’s a look at how everyone else did over the weekend at the North American box office:

  • Riddick – $18.6 Million
  • Lee Daniel’s The Butler – $8.9 Million
  • Instructions not included – $8.1 Million
  • We’re the Millers – $7.9 Million
  • Planes  – $4.2 Million
  • One Direction: This is us – $4.1 Million
  • Elysium – $3.1 Million
  • Blue Jasmine – $2.6 Million
  • Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – $2.5 Million
  • The World’s End – $2.3 Million

Elysium held up well for another week in the top ten. Up one place to number six, the film has made $212 million worldwide so far. One Direction saw a massive plunge in popularity at the circuit, dropping from their number one spot to five this past weekend, most likely due to the fact that people found Vin Diesel to be infinitely more interesting than yet another f$%^ng boy band film. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones did a hasty exit from the top ten over the weekend.

The latest stab at grabbing Twilight pie did not end well, as that film struggled to make $36.9 million worldwide. And that’s after a mere three weeks at the movies.

  1. Glad to see the Riddick franchise now has a second lease on life. Even if they transform it into another Fast & Furious style series, ‘more of the same’ is what Riddick fans want.

You forget about Pitch Black, which is how most got to know Riddick.

Never forgot about it at all, still the best Riddick movie but my point was that gamers have spent more time with the character and as such have a much deeper connection with him.

That may be true, but I think gamers are too small a demographic to consider them the driving force behind the franchise.

Oooooooooh, that is bullshit and can you guess why…? Hollywood has been trying to tap the gaming market for a long time and still haven’t managed to find the “magic” ingredient whereas Riddick movies are still being made because of the “too small a demographic”.

Mate, you are the one making huge assumptions here. You also quote me completely out of context just so to support your position. You can’t claim a win unless you actually show some proof to back your statements.

When talking crap I really don’t need to back anything up. It was all tongue in cheek nonsense spoken from a fanboy perspective. So take a deep breath and just ignore me.
Hope you have a great day as well!

Your first post was certainly not just tongue in cheek nonsense. And my point stands – people watch Riddick because of Pitch Black, not a game that, judging by its sales numbers, was a bit of a flop. Using your logic, one would argue it is comic books fans who make Marvel films successful. But if you compare comic sales to the movie grosses, that doesn’t add up at all. Ditto for Riddick.

So, we have to wait another 46 days to see this locally? All the pirates will have it before I can see it in the Cinema! Mind you they probably would have had it before then as well, but now it is guaranteed!

I will not be waiting and why should I? I will still support the film with a blu-ray purchase even though I refuse to wait for the cinema version of one of my favourite franchises.
Sometimes, just sometimes, it sucks balls to live in SA.
