MORTAL KOMBAAAAAT!!!!! Right, now that I earwormed you into the right mood, bobbing your heads to that piece of 90’s techno music brilliance while trying to remember in which order they read out the names in the song, we can talk Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat. Not Mortal Kombat: Legacy, the pretty cool web-series he’s doing though. No, I’m talking about the feature film that he’s been developing for a while now and which was originally slated to be released this year, but which we haven’t heard about in ages.

Mortal Kombat legacy (2)

Speaking to ComingSoon, Tancharoen revealed that everything is still on track as far as figuring out what story it is that they want to tell, they just don’t where to tell that story or how much it will cost.

“We’re still pushing through on that. The script is in a good place, we’re just kind of figuring out the budget and locations and that whole process is where we’re at.”

With Mortal Kombat Legacy finding huge success with fans, and creating a pretty incredible interpretation of the classic mythology, many are wondering whether the film will just be a continuation of the webseries or something new. It’ll be Door no.2 for Tancharoen, it seems.

“I think everyone’s intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it’s been around for 20+ years. We’re going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work.”

I personally have no problem with a series and movie franchise featuring the same characters/world running independently of each other (see: Smallville or any other better example that my brain can’t think of right now), but I do recognize that studios are afraid of this creating confusion in viewers (these are probably the same people who get confused when characters talk for longer than two minutes without being interrupted by an explosion). That’s why I have a feeling that if the movie should make it big, we can probably kiss our cool webisodes goodbye.

Mortal Kombat is currently scheduled for a release some time in 2015 (when else?), but until then though, you can get ready for Season 2 of Legacy by re-watching the recently released trailer.
