Jake Gyllenhaal and director David Villeneuve are currently scoring huge praise with their gripping thriller, Prisoners, with some Oscar buzz already attached to Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman’s performances in the film. That’s actually the second film that Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve have made together, but through the wonders of strange Hollywood production schedules, the first – Enemy – is being released second.

Based on it’s early festival buzz, Enemy is ever bit as fascinating and gripping, and now thanks to this teaser trailer we finally get our first glimpses of… Gyllenhaal teaching a class, riding a bus and brushing his teeth? Wait, what?!

Brilliantly adapted from the late Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago’s 2002 novel The Double, the latest from the Academy Award-nominated Denis Villeneuve breathes new life into the doppelgänger tradition, with a hypnotic, haunting, surreal approach that reaffirms the Quebec director as one of our generation’s most skilled storytellers.

Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a glum, disheveled history professor, who seems disinterested even in sex with his beautiful girlfriend, Mary (Mélanie Laurent). Watching a movie on the recommendation of a colleague, Adam spots his double, an actor named Anthony Clair, in a bit role, and decides to track him down — an adventure he quite relishes. The identical men meet, and their lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined.

Damn. When these people say teaser trailer, they really aren’t kidding about the “teaser” part. Besides for the fact that Gyllenhaal grows a mean beard, and can do sombre teeth brushing with the best of them, I’m not sure what else to take away from this. Which is actually kind of sad, as there is a fantastic premise here, and the early reactions out of Toronto International Film Festival was really, really strong.

Guess we’ll have to wait a little longer to see a bit more than just “Jake Gyllenhaal being us everyday”.

Enemy currently doesn’t have a release date yet.

  1. Wait, another doppelganger film following the one with Jesse Eisenberg?

Is this going to be like Bugz/ Antz or Deep Impact/ Armaggedon?
