Before 2009, Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr were not exactly the first, hell, even twenty-first people you would think of when it comes to Sherlock Holmes. But the stylish British director and motormouth actor managed to not only revitalize the character for a modern audience, while still maintaining a good connection to its classic literary roots, but they did it twice.
Everybody’s been keeping mum on a third film, but now Jude Law – who plays Holmes’ old boy sidekick, Dr. Watson – speaks up on where the production is right now, and what direction the threequel could take.
Before speaking to Empire about the third film though, Law revealed that as much as you all liked the first two Sherlock Holmes films, he probably liked them even more.
“I hate celebrating anything I’ve done, but I’m so proud of those films. I think it was Joel Silver who said, ‘Take it out of that dusty room and put it on the street’.”
And that enthusiasm hasn’t waned at all, and in fact they want to up the game even further, when they eventually get to resolve the second film’s cliffhanger… or is that waterfall-hanger?
“I think Warners want it and there’s a lot of want from us as a team. We want it to be better than the other two. We want to make sure it’s smarter and cleverer, but in the same realm.”
Unfortunately, what’s not in the same realm at the moment is everybody’s schedule. With Downey Jr currently the super-busy kingpin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Law and Ritchie off doing their own thing, getting everybody together to just make it is proving to be the biggest holdup to getting the film made.
“It’s a slow process. We’re all busy. So getting us together to try to nail that has taken a little bit longer than we had hoped.”
I really enjoyed the first two films – even if the second, was merely more of the same – so I’m hoping that they can crack the Mystery of the Misaligned Schedules. And who better to be on the case than the world’s greatest detective not played by Benedict Cumberbatch?

Benedict Cumberbatch’s potrayal was fine, but Holmes itself was a bunch of heel-dragging, spoonfeeding nonsense. At least Elementary put a nice spin on the Sherlock persona and do so at a nice pace. And Downey’s version was also a fresh breath. Frankly, if it wasn’t for Cumberbatch’s talents. Holmes would have sucked balls.
On another note, I;m very glad that a third film is on its way. Was just thinking this morning: if Iron Man could get a third chance, so should Sherlock Holmes.
