It was a busy weekend once again at the box office in North America. Hugh Jackman had some missing kids to find, JGL was Don John and Metallica was bringing the jibba jabba to several screens. But the big winner was some leftovers from four years ago, as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 dominated ticket sales.Animation ruled the weekend box office, with the Cloudy sequel ordering a $35 million takeaway. Topping the debut of the original flick by $5 million, Cloudy 2 also benefited from a wider release on more screens, and one of the best results yet for Sony Pictures Animation who have struggled to reach the same financial level as Dreamworks Animation and Pixar. Word of mouth is positive so far for the sequel, with critics enjoying the new premise, fresh jokes and outstanding visuals.

Expect Cloudy 2 to make several hundred millions of dollars before it eventually bows out. Rush expanded its horizons over the weekend, after a debut that saw it release onto a limited amount of screens. Racing back in from 38th position to third, the film is still struggling to make any significant headway, most likely due to the fact that this F1 film has left and right turns on the track. Here’s a look at how everyone else did on the weekend.

  •  Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 – $35 Million
  • Prisoners – $11.2 Million
  • Rush – $10.3 Million
  • Baggage Claim – $9.3 Million
  • Don John – $9 Million
  • Insidious Chapter 2 – $6.7 Million
  • The Family – $3.6 Million
  • Instructions not included – $3.3 Million
  • We’re the Millers – $2.8 Million
  • Lee Daniel’s The Butler – $2.4 Million

Departures from the top ten this week include Battle of the Year and Riddick. Despite a strong cast and a return to form, Riddick has struggled at the box office. It’s sitting on a worldwide total of just $84 million, but this figure will most likely increase when it hits Blu Ray and DVD. Metallica: Through the Never also debuted over the weekend, but at a 13th place spot , where it’s currently sitting with a total of $1.6 million domestically. Expect that to change though, when it hits a few thousand more screens, as this was part of a limited release.

  1. The Metallica movie was pretty cool , well bar from the “Storyline” , the concert parts will remind anyone who saw them earlier this year of how amazing of a show it was.

I am so pissed that I prob won’t catch it this week and it’s a one week limited release as far I understand. At least I have a decent home theater to annoy the fuck outta my neighbors and pump it if I can’t catch it on the big screen.
The concert earlier this year was EPIC!!!

Riddick is hamstrung by the fact that it was not a world-wide release. Bastards making me wait this long!

And it only cost around 30-odd million to make which means it’s making decent cash. Haven’t even seen this one yet and I already want another!
