You're not going to like the answer in the trailer for The Orchard's PARADOX ALICE

Up till now, I have to admit, I have no idea who The Orchard is so I feel pretty confident that most of you stand bewildered as well. The Orchard is, essentially, a one-stop shop for indie artists which distributes content digitally and while I don’t really lose any sleep over who the next Mumford and Sons are going to be, they seem to be sticking a finger into the movie industry pie and with the announcement that The Orchard will be releasing Paradox Alice, a sci-fi film that sounds particularly interesting.

paradox-alice-52013 hasn’t been a terrible year to be a geek. We’ve seen the release of quite a few of sci-fi, horror and superhero films with quite a few more still on their way, but our appetite for sci-fi still doesn’t seem to get appeased. The synopsis for Paradox Alice has piqued my interest though, and while it is clearly an indie effort with a rather low budget that will inevitably fall into relative obscurity due to only being released digitally, it is hard to ignore a plot as unique as this one, with the potential to spark quite a few debates.

Here’s the synopsis:

A group of astronauts have been sent on a dangerous mission to retrieve water from Europa, one of the several moons orbiting the planet Jupiter. After narrowly escaping the moon to head back home, the team discovers that a nuclear war has left earth uninhabitable. While the remaining male astronauts come to grips over their losses, one of the crew members spontaneously transforms into a woman. Each character tries to uncover the mystery of this horrific event. Was it an act of God, or a biological reaction for keeping the human race alive? As the men vie for the last female in existence, they begin to turn on one another. All of the questions come to a head in a shocking finale.

Do I have your attention now? Thought so. I’m extremely interested to see how the film handles the big questions that are raised in the film and whether they are trying to spark an existential debate with regards to human nature, gender roles and even a dash of religion but naturally, there is always the danger of the plot being considerably more heavy handed than we expect it to be, ultimately leading to disappointment. Luckily, there’s a trailer to go along with the synopsis and while I’m not quite convinced by the levels of acting I’ve seen, I don’t mind the low budget, as long as we get treated to something that so few Hollywood blockbusters manage these days…something unique, and something good. I’m not quite convinced that Paradox Alice is the answer, but only time will tell!

My prediction? Many parallels will be struck with the series finale for Battlestar Galactica, which might be best avoided. I’m just glad I’m not on that ship though, what a sausage fest.

Thanks Lourens for posting 🙂 I was one of the film makers for PARADOX ALICE and everything you described above for why we were making the movie is what I believe you are hoping for. Sure we didn’t have the lofty budgets of films like GRAVITY or OBLIVION. But I know all of the major studios would have been too scared to attack a movie such as this – as it does ask some pretty tough questions we rarely see in movies today. Cheers 🙂
