Starving games poster

Just yesterday I was watching the first Naked Gun film. It was funny, clever, filled with visual gags and somehow still relevant despite being a 25 year old movie. And as far as parody films go, The Starving Games is none of that.

Set in the most depressing corner of a post-apocalyptic future, our hero Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh) volunteers to take her manipulative younger sister’s place in the 75th annual “Starving Games.” In doing so, she must leave behind her smoldering just-a-friend Dale (Brant Daugherty) and team up with the geeky baker’s son Peter Malarkey (Cody Allen Christian) in a fight for her life. But wait, there’s more! She could also win an old ham, a coupon for a footlong sub at a six-inch price, and a partially-eaten pickle!

In “The Starving Games,” Friedberg and Seltzer’s sixth cinematic spoof of popular box-office hits, the prolific parody duo has its sights trained on the adventure blockbuster “The Hunger Games”! It’s all the laughs and half the calories as they sling dozens of cock-eyed, barbed arrows at sci-fi, action and fantasy films from “The Avengers” and “Oz The Great and Powerful” to pop culture characters and celebrities like Harry Potter and Taylor Swift.

I pride myself on loving bad films. But hells bells, a Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer collaboration usually smells worse than Batman and Robin. I’ve laughed at Kervyn’s jokes in the past, so you already know that the bar is set low for me. But not once, not once, did I even manage to chortle in that predictable and low budget train wreck.

It’s looking like all the other Friedberg and Seltzer films so far: Terrible. And if you feel like wasting your cash, it’ll be out next month for download on digital platforms.

“Cock-eyed, barbed arrows” Given their previous movies I’m going assume that’s not a metaphor & they really do have penis-headed arrows.

Vampires Suck was the best spoof I have seen in ages. Then again I really have something against twilight and that could have influenced me greatly.

I chuckled a few times during the trailer. I do not go out of my way to watch spoof movies – I only see them during lazy channel hopping days with nothing else on worth watching.
