Ah, Shia LaBeouf, he of the frantic running and screaming and talkingreallyfastwithouttakinganybreathsinbetweenthewords. Way before he became a walking meme-generator with the Transformers movies, LaBeouf was actually a bright young talent with a lot of potential. And since putting his days of Baysplosions and toe-thumbs behind him, the young actor has been trying his best to live up to that early potential, taking challenging and interesting roles wherever he could. Including, showing us his penis.

Luckily, the latest milestone in his steps to recovery, Charlie Countryman, doesn’t feature LaBeouf’s li’l beef, but it does have some stunning visuals, a lot of strong early festival buzz, Harry Potter’s ginger friend and Mads Mikkelsen.

When his late mother appears in a vision and tells him to go to Bucharest, Charlie immediately boards a plane across the Atlantic. But when he meets a fellow passenger, Charlie finds himself with another promise to fulfill. Charlie does so – and falls head over heels in love with Gabi, a beautiful musician. However, a vicious gangster has already laid claim to Gabi, and has no intention of letting her go. Determined to protect her, Charlie enters into the hallucinatory, Romanian underworld filled with violence and, strangely enough, love.

That is quite the impressive cast that debut director Fredrik Bond has assembled for this. Any movie boasting both Mads Mikkelsen and Melissa Leo will always get my attention, as those two veterans just own everything they ever appear in. And visually, the film  certainly looks rather intriguing. Now it could just be the cut of the trailer, but I’m seeing a whole lot of Tony Scott style editing touches coming through, and based on the quotes in that trailer, that is definitely a good thing.

It will also be interesting to see how Bond handles the balance of action and drama. Also, and here’s the big one, exactly how much frantic running will LaBeouf be doing with a good looking girl, Evan Rachel Wood, at his side?

Charlie Countryman will be getting a limited theatrical release on November 15, 2013.
