Director David O. Russell has developed a reputation over the years of not exactly being the nicest person on a movie set. He’s a superb filmmaker though, so he often attracts some of the most talented actors around. They just need to be prepared to undergo some stressful experiences.

That doesn’t seem to be the case on his latest film, American Hustle,  though, as clearly the star studded cast of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence were able to let their hair down. And up. And permed in tiny rollers. Oh, Bradley Cooper… the tiny rollers. And all those bad hairstyles, and incredible performances, can be found in this new trailer.

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the States, “American Hustle” tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, “American Hustle” defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.

Whereas the previous teaser for American Hustle was far more jovial, this one seems to be keeping it mostly serious. Mostly. From the trailer, it feels a lot like Goodfellas by way of a Wella ad. And I really like it.

American Hustle will be conning you out of your movie tickets from December 13, 2013.

Putting a guy like Christian Bale into a film raises the game – I didn’t even recognise him! This will be interesting, because I think Bradley Cooper has the makings of a great actor and it looks like he really pushed for this film.
