After a couple of weeks at the top, it looks like Gravity finally came back down to Earth. The dominating performance of that Oscar-contender was cut short this week, by none other than an old man with loose morals and a habit of being a Jackass. Here’s how the North American box office did over the weekend.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa knocked Gravity down to second place, taking in an estimated $32 million from 3336 cinemas. That’s not bad for a Jackass movie, and the second highest gross for that franchise, just behind Jackass 3D. Sitting nicely with the Jackass brand of buffoonary, Bad Grandpa got some solid word of mouth, and attracted plenty of attention.

Even though it was in second place, Gravity didn’t fare too badly at all. A $20 million haul means that the film is now sitting on a global take of $364 million, and all that Oscar talk won’t hurt the movie in the long run either. Expect that standing to take a bit of a tumble next week though, when Gravity gives up its IMAX screens to Ender’s Game.

Opening in over 3000 locations, a star-studded cast couldn’t save The Counselor from a weak opening. With just $8 million earned, The Counselor is a flop for director Ridley Scott, with poor reviews keeping audiences away. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend:

  • Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa – $32 Million
  • Gravity – $20.3 Million
  • Captain Philips – $11.8 Million
  • The Counselor – $8 Million
  • Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 – $6.1 Million
  • Carrie – $5.9 Million
  • Escape Plan – $4.3 Million
  • 12 years a slave – $2.1 Million
  • Enough said – $1.5 Million
  • Prisoners – $1 Million

Top ten departures this week include Insidious Chapter Two, The Fifth Estate and Runner Runner. Insidious didn’t fare so well, exiting the top ten with just $128 million in international tickets after seven weeks. The Fifth Estate was an even bigger bust however, as it scraped in a pitiful $2.8 million at the US box office with a two week shelf life so far.
