We’ve seen the reasonably useless teaser trailer of last week and all the other pics released, and we’ve heard all the strong buzz from Comic-Con. But we’re a skeptical lot around here (Darryn is still not entirely convinced that washing more than once a fortnight is good for you) so when a movie as ambitious in scope as X-Men: Days of Future Past comes along, we really need to see for ourselves whether it can actually deliver on its lofty promises.

Based on this long awaited trailer, and to paraphrase a certain world leader, yes it can.

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past to save our future.

Ooerooererooohh. I’ve got chills, and they’re definitely doing something mathematical.

This is apparently the very same footage that was shown at June’s Comic-Con and which brought the house down, and I can see why. If you’ve noticed, the trailer plays up the emotional angle and character beats way more than it does pyrotechnics, and there’s a reason for that.

Director Bryan Singer took to Twitter to do a Q&A about the movie just before the trailer’s release and there he revealed that the “trailer is primarily a character piece, as most of our VFX are not yet finished.”

He also went to explain that “although there is a great deal of humor, the overall tone is a bit darker than previous films, particularly because of the stakes,” which is something that definitely shines through in this trailer. And of course, yes, there will be Sentinels in action.

You can check out the entire Q&A over at ComingSoon, or you can do what I’m about to do and hit play on that trailer again

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be time-travelling into cinemas on May 23, 2014.
