Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

So remember that completely incredible, kick in the emotional pants “backwards” trailer for the videogame Dead Island? Of course you do, because it made you constatly ask “Why isn’t the game this damn good?!”

Well, while I have no answer to that question, what I do have is this incredible live action, shot for shot remake of that trailer, courtesy of the folks at Machinima.

Looks like Borat and Borat director Larry Charles is about to take A Walk in the Woods, and based on the cast involved, I’m hoping and praying that no mankinis show up. Based on Bill Bryson’s comic memoir, and adapted by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), the road-trip comedy follows “an aging travel writer (Robert Redford) who decides to hike the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail, accompanied by a long-estranged high school buddy (Nick Nolte) he’s been avoiding for years. Along the way, the duo face off with each other, nature and an eccentric assortment of characters only to discover that some roads are better left untraveled.”

The film has gone through lengthy list of possible directors, including Redford himself, but now Charles is a firm lock for the director’s chair, and in typical fashion released this statement about getting the gig.

“Growing up in the wilds of Brooklyn, you can see why I was the natural choice to direct A Walk In The Woods,” he says. “I didn’t see a tree till I was 27. I’ve pitched a lot of projects, but I’ve never pitched a tent. But A Walk In The Woods is not merely about a hike. It is an epic, intense, absurd journey through our collective past, present and future. A journey outward and inward. A journey into darkness but also into the light. And I am honoured and humbled to take that walk with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. Two true bonafide icons of American cinema. Does anyone have bug spray?”

Speaking of taking walks in woods, we’re just under 2 months from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which of course means advertising overdrive, so here ya go:  7 new character posters featuring Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), Bard (Luke Evans), Thranduil (Lee Pace), and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).

Were you one of the guys not too happy with Marvel’s treatment of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3? So too, were you jumping for joy when the rumours surfaced last week that Ben Kingsley’s “secret Marvel project” could be a One-Shot that fixes that plot twist?

Yeah, I hate to burst, slap and the grind your bubble under foot, but that ain’t happening. At least not according to Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce who says that if there’s “one thing [he knows] for sure: nobody’s going to be apologizing for the Mandarin twist any time soon.”

And Ben Kingsley seemed to back up that statement when he spoke to Vanity Fair about the Marvel One-Shot, not revealing much details except that the way the Mandarin was handled is here to stay.

“I think it may be seen as . . . sometimes [Marvel] tacks on a short film to one of their other releases, maybe on a DVD or something. I haven’t heard anything at all about this. So it’s in progress. It will have to remain under wraps. Marvel was so brilliant in the way they kept the transition from the Mandarin to Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3. They were absolutely brilliant at it. I so respect the way they dearly want to surprise their audiences. But we will just have to leave it in the realm of rumor.”

Much has been said about The Weinstein Company’s planned edit of Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer, with most of what was said being swear words from me. And I’ve just uttered a few new choice ones. See, the film opened in a few areas this past weekend, but since TWC doesn’t have the distribution rights in France, the unedited director’s cut was actually screened there and the Playlist got to see and review it. And it sounds like a sci-fi masterpiece.

Which we won’t see like it was meant to be seen. Balls.

Not content to just show up as a cameo Stan Lee heads down to Legacy Effects, the FX company that brought Iron Man to life for Marvel, and gives a great behind the scenes look at their production.

A story popped up a short while back saying that Mad Max: Fury Road was heading back for some reshoots. Apparently though, we actually have no idea the word “reshoots” actually mean, so why don’t we let star Tom Hardy explain it to us?

“(Mad Max)’s great. It’s a big old piece, it’s a behemoth of a piece. I’m off there next week to do some reshoots, well not reshoots actually, but doing more. We’re building, building more Mad Maxes, even more spectacular and cool stuff.”

So reshoots = human cloning? Got it.

Hey, you seem to be running a bit low on your regular dose of Star Wars rumous, so here, let me top that up for you. According to the folks at Star Wars fansite Jedi News, Twelve Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII in an unspecified role. Their source? Somebody at The Times saw him sitting in the lobby of director JJ Abrams’ office.

I’m a huge Ejiofor fan, from way back in his Serenity days already, and I would like nothing more than for this to be true, but I’d take this with a Death Star full of salt.

Here’s Everything Wrong with Halloween. And before you break out the pitch forks and torches, we’re talking about Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake not the classic John Carpenter original.

Boy, when Jeph Loeb teases something, you really don’t have long to wait for the payoff (and no I will not be making a dirty joke about that sentence). Just last week Marvel’s Head of Television was hinting at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. potentially being able to crossover with the events in the Marvel movies, and now it looks like it’s already happening. The synopsis for the 9 November episode, “The Well”, reveals that the show will be tying into the events of Thor: The Dark World somehow.

“In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvel’s ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the pieces — one of which threatens to destroy a member of the team.”

While Thor: The Dark World may have opened in Europe this weekend past, it only opens in North America (and South Africa) this coming Friday, just four days before the episode airs. Now I don’t think that Marvel would be suck dicks so as to spoil anything major from the movie before giving more people the chance to see it, so I wouldn’t get my hopes up for too serious a crossover.

Also, completely useless geek trivia: The episode will be directed by Jonathan Frakes, best known to most as Commander Riker from Star Trek: The New Generation. I’m hoping to see Agent Coulson sit down like Riker.

And for a blast from the past! Or rather, a blaster from the past. A blooper reel for the original Star Wars has surfaced, and goes to show that it’s no wonder the Empire lost, when Stormtroopers can’t even navigate doors!

Also, no need to adjust your speaker volumes, the first few clips actually don’t have sound.
