Big sci-fi, turkeys running amok and old coots getting hedonistic were the newest films to hit the North American box office over the weekend while a certain son of Odin did some hammer time on the international scene. Ender’s Game was triumphant in the end though, formulating a strategy that kept it in first place. But for how long?

Ender’s Game did some decent business, pulling in a $28 million lead into first place. While not a spectacular debut for such a dogged production, it’s one of the better performances so far this year with regards to Young Adult adaptations, putting it on par with After Earth. However, expect the film to suffer in the long run, as a mixed advertising campaign that focused more on everyone else but Ender himself will lead audiences astray, and Thor: The Dark World arriving this week in the US of A.

Last Vegas narrowly beat Free Birds to take third place on the weekend, scoring $16.5 million. The film is a decent start for anything that Robert De Niro has been in this year, but disappointing for Morgan Freeman whose screen presence usually guarantees a stronger start. Free Birds proved to a bigger disapointment in the financial long run. Opening up to $16.2 million, the Thanksgiving flick earned less than Chicken Run, which made $17.5 million on opening…in 2000. Here’s how everyone else did.

  • Ender’s Game – $28 Million
  • Bad Grandpa – $20 Million
  • Last Vegas – $16.5 Million
  • Free Birds – $16.2 Million
  • Gravity – $13.1 Million
  • Captain Phillips – $8.5 Million
  • 12 years a slave – $4.6 Million
  • Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 – $4.2 Million
  • Carrie – $3.4 Million
  • The Counselor – $3.2 Million

Meanwhile, Thor: The Dark World opened to decent numbers when it debuted in numerous international markets. The son of Asgard sequel pulled in $109.4 million in 36 countries, a figure which pushed Disney profits up to $2.314 billion for the year, topping their 2010 record-breaking sum of $2.302 billion.

Top ten departures this week include Enough Said and Prisoners. Starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhal, Prisoners has been lukewarm at best, only making $102 million worldwide.

  1. Glad to see Ender did a bit better than the predictions and maybe it will become a slow-burning hit.
