I can’t even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed The Wolverine earlier this year. No, wait. Scratch that. I can actually tell you exactly how much I enjoyed it: 66.6%. That’s because the film’s third and final act went off the rails a bit, ending up smack dab in the middle of downtown Cheesy Comic-ville.
But for those opening two acts though, director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman crafted the mature, gritty, non-cartoonish Wolverine movie that I had been waiting to see for years. Walking out of the cinema, I really wished they could just have made more of that.
Well, it seems that I’m getting what I asked for!
According to a report over at Deadline, Mangold has apparently entered talks with Twentieth Century Fox to once occupy the director’s chair for another solo outing for the famed X-Man with the adamantium (or should that now be bone?) claws. Hugh Jackman is of course a lock for the role that, with the exception of Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark, he has definitively made his, like no other actor in a genre film today.
While The Wolverine just barely made back its $120 million production budget in domestic (i.e. US) revenue, it was a huge success overseas, resulting in a total of 413 million reasons for Fox to make another film with the pairing of Mangold and Jackman.
Currently the story details are being kept firmly under wraps (especially since whatever happens will probably be playing off the events of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past), but Mangold himself is apparently penning a treatment for the film. There’s no mention of whether or not he intends to personally turn that treatment into the full screenplay, but with writing credits like Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted and Walk the Line under his belt, I certainly can’t see much argument against that plan of action.
Whoever ends up with the pen/keyboard in their hand, I would just love it if they kept the smaller, more personal scope that The Wolverine had, instead of now trying to outdo themselves by going bigger and louder. The character of Wolverine is at his best in this type of self contained ninja-noir story, and I would definitely pay to see more of that.
