Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Despite the fact that it has consistently been a ratings juggernaut, The Walking Dead has been very back and forth in quality since its first season. One thing/person that has always been a high point though has got be Norman Reedus’ crossbow toting badass, Darryl Dixon. Except, he wasn’t always that crossbow toting badass, as this early training video reveals.

Crossbow!!!

Robert Pattinson has joined Benedict Cumberbatch in director James Gray’s long in development The Lost City of Z, which despite what the name implies is actually not about a hidden city populated by embarrased Zorro victims. The film is an adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction book, “The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon” which follows “English soldier-turned-explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett, whose obsession with the Amazon and belief that an ancient civilization resided there led him on many expeditions where he narrowly escaped death. After financing eventually dried up, Fawcett self-funded one last adventure into the Amazon with his son, from which neither returned.”

It’s assumed that Cumberbatch will play Fawcett senior, but there’s still doubt as to whether Pattinson will play his son or not, seeing as he’s only 10 years younger than his co-star.

And because your day isn’t complete without some new bit of news about The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, here are two new pics featuring elves Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).

A few weeks back it was revealed that JJ Abrams would be taking over writing duties from Michael Arndt on Star Wars: Episode VII, alongside veteran writer Lawrence Kasdan (who also penned what many consider the best  film in the franchise, The Empire Strikes Back). Contrary to popular belief though, Abrams didn’t do this just because he wants to RULE ALL DA SCIENCE FICTIONZ! as the director explained.

“It became clear that given the time frame and given the process and the way the thing was going that working with Larry in this way was going to get us where we need to be and when we needed to be.”

And that when has just been revealed, as Disney officially announced last night Star Wars: Episode VII will be released on December 18, 2015. So yes, it was all just about a schedule, JJ wasn’t trying to usurp Arndt or anything.

“Working with Michael was a wonderful experience and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of his or adore him more, He’s a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process… [This] doesn’t preclude working with Michael again in the future.”

Everybody knows that Thor is better than Loki, right? I mean, this should not even be a contest. And yet, there are some silly kids out there who still worship the blonde locked God of thunder. Luckily Loki is there to put them in their place. Their place being the floor.

Boy, if you wanted to smack Jaden Smith in the face during After Earth, then you’re probably about to feel the urge to commit some Old Testament style genocide on his pouty kisser. The young Will Smith progeny has just recently joined Twitter, and…well… just take a look for yourself. Also make sure your kids stay in school.

So this morning, in that Wonder Woman rumour story, it was mentioned that other heroes could also possibly be showing up in Batman vs Superman. Which other heroes? Well, scoopmaster El Mayimbe from over on Latino Review thinks he knows who: Dick Grayson aka Nightwing.

Now Dick Grayson was Batman’s original sidekick, Robin, before growing out of the green pixie boots and swimming trunks and becoming the hero Nightwing, which is when he became a firm fan favourite. This older Dick (hurr durr) is apparently who will be showing up, with studios looking for a “young John Hawkes type” that’s a “caucasian who can do martial arts and is 5’10″”.

What’s more is that apparently this Dick Grayson and Batman “haven’t spoken in year” purporting to some falling out when Grayson was still Robin, and perhaps leading to the “tired and weary” Batman we’ve been hearing about.

Self appointed marketing department for every movie he’s ever involved in, Vin Diesel, has been sharing pics on his Facebook page again, this time giving us our first look at UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey in a scene from Fast & Furious 7. Also, some random girl’s butt.

Being a gigantic MMA fan myself, I can use my wealth of knowledge about the sport to confirm that Diesel is about 10 seconds away from having his shoulder dislocated by a flying armbar here.

While some of the sillier moments in Prometheus felt like it was written by a concussed American football player, that’s apparently just pure coincidence when it comes to one of director Ridley Scott’s next project. Scott and his producing partner Giannina Facio are apparently meeting with potential A-list writers to help create a “morality tale” drama around American football, specifically “focusing on the debilitating effects that concussions are having on our sports heroes, and the role that league owners play in allowing it to happen.”

Did you know that Parks and Recreation funnyman Aziz Ansari was supposed to be in current Best FIlm of 2013 frontrunner, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, but that his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor? You didn’t? Well then it’s a good thing that Conan O’Brien and I are here to correct that oversight.

You know that moment at the end of Man of Steel? Trust me, if you’ve seen the movie then you know what moment I’m talking about. Well, what if the type of thinking that went into that moment was combined with the animation style of the classic Bruce Timm produced Superman animated series? Well, it would be bloody hilarious, that’s what.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos,  or even artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses (as long as they are somehow movie related), feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
