Ride Along

I’m fairly certain that police departments world-wide have some stringent rules when it comes to police officers taking civilians out on a ride-along for a fun-filled day of interrogations, accidental shootings and trips to the gun range. Or, at least I hope they do. Because if they don’t, that means the potential scenarios in Ride Along are actually plausible, which makes this movie kind of scary.

Ride Along looks to be a “new twist” on the buddy cop dynamic, where good cop/bad cop literally means one of them is good at being a police officer, and the other is a bumbling idiot. And, he’s also not really a cop, just a school security guard looking to “prove his worth” to his potential future brother-in-law, so that he can marry the cop’s sister.

In Ride Along, fast-talking security guard Ben (Kevin Hart) joins his cop brother-in-law James (Ice Cube) on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta in order to prove himself worthy of marrying Angela (Tika Sumpter), James’ sister.

Written by Greg Coolidge, Jason Mantzoukas, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, and directed by Tim Story, Ride Along stars Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, and co-stars John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill and Bryan Callen.

Yeah, okay, not exactly my kind of movie. All I can see are potential plot-holes and totally over-the-top situations, and I’m pretty sure that the police wouldn’t take their ride-alongs into seriously dangerous situations, or let them handle weapons. But hey, all in the name of comedy right?

Ride Along opens on 17 January, 2014
