If there is one thing that Guillermo Del Toro is great at, besides multi-tasking, it’s coming up with some truly creepy monsters. Mimic, Blade 2 and Pacific Rim are just a few examples of his horrrific imagination. And now he’s going back to the Nsoferatu with The Strain, which has received the go ahead green light from FX.

FX wants a 13 episode run of the series, which will debut in July 2014. Based on the book trilogy written by Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the plot centers on a scientific team who are fighting a battle to end a viral scourge that causes all those it infects to gain vampire traits. The series has a cast in place, that includes Corey Stoll, John Hurt, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, and Kevin Durand. Lost showrunner Carlton Cuse will help shepard the series, with Del Toro executive producing.

If all goes to plan, The Strain will have a definitive beginning, middle and end, and an episode count of between 39 to 65 episodes according to Collider, meaning a maximum of five seasons will be produced. Parts of the first season have already been shot, with the rest of the show being filmed later this month.
