Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Oh so you’re thought that all this Doctor Who craziness is now over and we can all start acting like normal adults again? Ge-wrong-imo! Us Whovians may have got an early Christmas in the form of the 50th Anniversary Special, Day of the Doctor, but there’s a still a real Christmas on the way and we know what that means: A Doctor Who Christmas Special! And this one is kind of a big deal, as it will be Matt Smith’s final time donning the bow tie as we’ll see him hand over the reins to Peter Capaldi.

And the first teaser trailer for the Christmas Special is now out!

Much has been said about Harvey Weinstein’s decision to butcher Korean director Bong Joon-Ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi epic Snowpiercer to dumb it down for US audiences, and much of what was said goes along the lines of “WTF, Harvey?!”. But it seems that there’s hope yet that the unedited cut (which has been received with gigantic praise in the few places it has been released) may just be seeing the light of the day.

While at the Mar del Plata Film Festival this weekend, the director hinted at some positive developments.

“I stayed in New York for two weeks before coming here to Mar del Plata, mostly because of this matter. And the good news is that after all the speculation and comments about that 20-minute cut, and considering the original version that was released in Korea and France also will be released in Japan and Hong Kong, we have been talking a lot about keeping the original cut for the U.S. release, so what I can say is… have faith.”

JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings established him as the father of fantasy literature, with just about every writer since borrowing from the worlds and characters he created. And while everybody uses him for inspiration, we’ll finally get to see where he got his from, as a biopic about the famed author is in development.

Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment are the ones behind it, while David Gleeson pens the script which “chronicles the key moments in Tolkien’s life that shaped him and led him to write Hobbit, the classic children’s book, in 1937, and then, starting in 1954, his Rings trilogy.”

With Marvel movies all Hulk-smashing the box office and garnering hordes of fans, it’s only to be expected that many actors want to get involved in one of their projects, and Chris Pratt (who plays Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy) is no exception to this.

“Just the fact that he was part of the Marvel brand was really exciting. I was signed up to do the movie before I was even allowed to read a script, so it wasn’t like something about this particular character that got me to do it. The fact that it was a Marvel movie is what got me to do it.

Granted, once I did read it there were so many things about the character that I love, and one thing is that he’s very much a kid at heart. He’s like a man-child. And I like the idea that he’s got a false sense of bravado. Deep down inside he’s lonely and desperate. But on the outside he walks around like he’s big and tough, and I don’t think he does a great job of convincing everybody that he’s not just a scared little child.

Oh… My… God! There’s a new brief – very brief – teaser trailer out for the third season of Sherlock.

Looks like Arrow fans wanting to see CW’s popular TV series tie up with the bigger DC Comics universe in Batman vs Superman and subsequently Justice League just took an arrow to the knee. Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti delivered the news when he revealed that they had never spoken to the highers up at Warner Bros about it.

“We haven’t had any of those conversations other than to say, what characters are we allowed to use this year and advocate or request certain ones that are of interest to us. And every now and then, they’ll say, ‘You can’t have that guy.’ They don’t say why, and we figure out why later on.”

War[craft]! What is it good for?! Well, it’s good for taking up all of Duncan Jones’ time, that’s what. The Moon director has been attached to a biopic about James Bond creator Ian Fleming for a long time now, but he has now left the production entirely. Jones starts filming the video game adaptation, World of Warcraft in January and is expected to be in post-production for most of the year, something which the producers of Fleming are unable to wait for. There’s no word yet on his replacement.

With Doctor Who occupying all the headlines lately, newscasters from around the world, who may never have even known about the show before, have found themselves reporting on it. And for some of them, the concept of Doctor Who may be a bit hard to grasp.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will be working together again to produce Sleeper, an adaptation of the Ed Brubaker penned comic book, for Warner Bros. Released under DC’s Vertigo imprint, Sleeper is set “in a noir universe where a few people are spontaneously developing superpowers” and tells the tale of Holden Carver, a man who comes into contact with an alien artifact which gives him the ability of being immune to pain, by storing up what pain he would have experienced in injury and then being able to transfer it all to somebody else. Carver is sent by a government law enforcement agency to infiltrate a criminal organization, but then has his loyalty questioned when ends up developing feelings for Miss Misery, one of the organization’s most malicious killers.

The Shield and Last Resort creator Shawn Ryan will be penning the script, alongside his Last Resort co-writer David Wiener. A Sleeper adaption has been in development at WB since 2008 with Tom Cruise attached to star at one point, but at this time there’s no word on cast or director.

Hold on to your Mad Hats as Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska has finally officially joined the production on Alice in Wonderland 2. The Muppets director James Bobin will be taking over the reins from original director Tim Burton, and I’m hoping that besides for making an all-around better film than the uneven mess that Burton left, Bobin will also find a way to not have Johnny Depp look like a ginger haired, nightmare version of Madonna.

Yes, I know, I know. It’s one more Doctor Who related thing! But this one is particularly good. If you watched Day of the Doctor, you may have noticed that [MILD SPOILER ALERT, SWEETIES!] despite all 13 Doctors being used in the story, not all of them actually saw any significant screen time. But not through lack of trying though, as can be seen in this simply amazeballs (and I don’t just use “amazeballs” for anything) little webisode, titled The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. It’s written and directed by Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, who also stars alongside Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy and Eighth Doctor Paul McGann, along with a wealth of famous faces from the Who-niverse and beyond. And like I said, amazeballs.
