Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Thor: The Dark World may have tripped up on a few issues, but if there’s one thing where it succeeded massively, it was in proving that Loki is indeed the most awesomest thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, that and the visual effects. The visual effects were real pretty. And since I can’t take you behind the scenes to show you how actor Tom Hiddleston was made, you’ll have to settle for this behind the scenes clip showing off how some of the effects were produced.

It’s finally legit. Marvel have at last officially confirmed the open secret that Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be playing superpowered siblings Wanda and Petra Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) in writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. And they did it only about a month after Samuel L. Jackson.

Olsen spoke to Moviefone about getting the gig, and her preparations for the role, which will see her get a little “messed up”.

“I hung out with Mr. Whedon recently. I’m really excited about this movie. I’m so excited about Scarlet Witch. I have had so much fun reading all about her and I am like learning new words that I had to look up on Wikipedia. I’m really enjoying it.

“I just love Scarlet Witch. I love her. It’s so funny because I’m often talking about all these psychologically damaged people, but when you talk about Scarlet Witch… She is a messed up lady. She has got more sh*t to deal with than anybody else I know. I’m excited to figure out what’s appropriate to use for her, because there’s so much material from all of these decades, and we’re going to tell this one story. So to be able to choose what you’re going to bring into it from all of this abundance, it’s really fun.”

Dear every non-comic book fan who has ever gone to see a Marvel movie with me, if my behaviour was anything like in this latest, rather insightful Dorkly comic strip, I’m sorry.

If it at first you don’t succeed, cast your ex-lead’s fake dad… or something? Charlie Hunnam dropped out as the leading man for smutty novel adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey earlier in the year, and now Variety brings word that Max Martini, who recently played Hunnam’s on-screen father in Pacific Rim, has joined the cast as the bodyguard to Christian Grey, now being played by Hunnam’s replacement Jamie Dornan.

Looks like besides for just blowing up helicarriers and making shiny silver, cybernetic arms cool again (they were cool once, right? I don’t keep up with fashion trends), Captain America: The Winter Soldier will also be expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly when it comes to establishing certain characters that may just be popping up in other future movies. At least that’s according to Frank Grillo, who plays Brock Rumlow aka the villainous Crossbones in the sequel.

“It’s an origin film. You meet people who are going to be around for a while, so they introduce the characters. It’s almost like it’s a series. It’s fun. I can’t say very much about it because Marvel’s very strict about what you’re allowed to say. The movie, we’ve seen bits of it, and it is spectacular.”

“They do actually [have plans for me to return as Crossbones]. We’ll see what happens. We’ll see if the fans respond to Brock and how it goes.”

David O. Russell’s American Hustle (rhyming unintentional) is looking like a serious Oscar contender, if the early buzz is to be believed, with the film’s entire ensemble cast possibly eligible for some personal time with that naked golden guy. So how do you tell them all apart except for the fact that, you know, one was Batman, another is Jennifer Lawrence and so on? Well, that’s where this new TV spot comes, giving you an introduction as to exactly who’s who.

Some lucky journos over in the States got treated to 17 minutes of footage from Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and if you like your movies in text form (I guess you’re old school like that) then head on over to Slashfilm where they have a detailed breakdown of what they saw. Along with the footage, star Chris Pine was also on hand to chat to the audience, and he had this to say about the differences of tackling the character of Jack Ryan – who although he is a military man, has never killed anybody before – as opposed to the roles he’s previously played.

“Many films in the milieu, in this ilk, it’s like, bad guys die all the time and no one’s really reacting to the fact that people are dying. [Director Kenneth Branagh] and I talked about that in the beginning of the process thinking, well, what would that look like? … You’ve just killed a human being, and what does that mean, and how does that affect the person?”

“[Star Trek’s Captain Kirk] is fun because he’s such a blowhard and also tonally in that film I can be a little bit bigger and there’s comedy and you can go a little bit broader and I love, love that. [But with Jack Ryan], Ken kept on asking me to go smaller and it’s very difficult for me because I’m very used to kind of being, you know, the brash thing, whatever. It was hard. Ken kept on saying we just wanted to rest the camera on your face and see a man thinking and processing what’s happening. I’m not very comfortable with that. I kind of want to do something and he kept on telling me to stop it.”

Paramount has set a release date for their Friday the 13th reboot and – GASP, SHOCK, HORROR, NOBODY EVER SAW THAT COMING – it will be out Friday the 13th March 2014. There are no other details yet for the movie, but with the current movie naming trends, I’m expecting this one to be called Friday the 13th: Friggatriskaidekaphobia. That’s a real word, by the way.

A trio of new posters for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has just come stomping into and right over town, featuring Kristen Wiig as Steve Carrell’s love interest, Chani; James Marsden as hotshot rival news anchor, Jack Lime, and Meagan Good as the new TV station boss, Linda Jackson.

According to reports from Deadline, HBO will apparently be picking up the Steven Spielberg produced mini-series based on a 1961 script, penned by the late Stanley Kubrick, about the life of 18th century French Emperor and military general Napoleon Bonaparte. And apparently, The Great Gatsby director Baz Lurhmann is currently looking to direct the entire thing. Yes, HBO, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick and Baz Lurhmann. All together. I expect an ultra violent, acid tripping Napoleon who keeps breaking out in a Jay-Z song. In 3D.

You think The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s opening weekend haul was impressive? While it may be, if it keeps up its current rate of box office success it’s going to earn a different, seriously impressive accolade, finding itself at the top of the list of The 20 Highest Grossing Films Featuring Female Action Heroines In A Leading Role.

Ever wondered what it would be like if Star Wars and Star Trek crossed over? A whole lot of this, that’s what it would be like.

We’ve known for a while already that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be featuring Spidey nemesis Norman Osborn. Actually since the end of the first film, when the character was sort of introduced. I say sort of, because he was literally all in the shadows, and only on screen for a few minutes. But according to Chris Cooper, who plays Osborn in TASM2, this sequel will serve as a proper introduction to the character. Did I say proper? I meant odd.

‘[Amazing] Spider-Man 2’ is an introduction to Norman. And you’ll see an extremely odd introduction, which apparently will lead to something more.”

That odd introduction may have something to do with those leaked storyboards from a few days ago [WARNING: THAT LINK IS VERY SPOILERIFIC], but as for the “something more” I’m almost certain that would be the Sinister Six. The classic group of Spider-Man villains has been teased by director Marc Webb for a while now, and when Cooper was asked about it, he just about outright confirmed their involvement.

“They sent me some material. But they said also that this Spider-Man is its own Spider-Man. We’re just kind of starting from the beginning.”

A lot has been said about how the availability of fancy schmancy big, high definition TV’s and eardrum destroying surround sound systems have detracted from the appeal of cinemas, as you can get that experience at home. But really, think about it carefully. Do you really, really want an authentic cinema experience in the comfort of your home?
