Monday Box Office Report – This Old Boy got Frozen

 

Things got a bit chilly at the North American box office this weekend, with new debuts arriving to take on the Hunger Games champ, Catching Fire. But no one could unseat that behemoth of a film, but there was still plenty of cash to be made. Here’s how that weekend went.

Disney’s latest animated flick, Frozen, opened up to a $66.7 million haul. Taking advantage of the Thanksgiving weekend, the adaptation of the old folk tale was a formidable contender, but couldn’t it couldn’t unseat the Hunger Games sequel. Strong marketing helped Frozen succeed at the box office, putting it way ahead of 2010’s Tangled and 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph.

Jason Statham’s latest flick, Homefront, didn’t do as well. Arriving in fifth place with a $6.9 million take, the film is the latest in a line of Statham movies that have failed to even break $10 million on opening. That’s a trend that followed The Black Nativity as well, with a terrible $3.8 million debut, but the biggest loser this weekend had to be SPike Lee’s Old Boy.

The remake of the Korean classic bombed badly, making just $850 000 from 583 cinemas. Bad marketing, word of mouth and a busy box office means that this film won’t go far before it gets removed from circulation and rushed to DVD. Here’s how everyone else did this weekend.

Plenty of films saw a departure from the box office top ten this weekend. Free Birds, 12 years a slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Bad Grandpa were some of those films. Gravity also departed after 8 weeks of wowoing audiences, with a healthy global haul of $615 million, while the latest Jackass film finished up a five week run to make $135 million off of a $15 million budget.
