We’ve already had one – pardon the pun – amazing trailer for a hot sequel today, and now it’s time for a couple of muscled Greeks to see if they can do the same. They may not have radioactive arachnid powers or be masters of the electric boogaloo, but what the digitally enhanced warriors of 300: Rise of an Empire do have is a very badass looking and sounding Eva Green, a pissed off Lena Headey, plenty of bow-splintering naval warfare and lots and LOTS of green screen sunset backdrops!

Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel “Xerxes” and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield – on the sea – as Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. “300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemesia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Is it just me, or d0es everything suddenly look very, very sunny in this sequel? I don’t mean the tone, which stills seems to be pretty blood soaked, just like the first film. What I mean is that in 300, a lot of the heavy handed digital effects were not as painfully obvious due to the fact that director Zack Snyder was pulling shots straight from Frank Miller’s art, which has always been very shadow-heavy. With this, there’s an almost cheapness to it, purely because of the fact that you can now clearly see those fake backgrounds.

Other than that though, this seems to be business as usual, with lots of quote-worthy speeches, badass last stands and epically stylized, crimson splashed fights, which is definitely not a bad thing.

300: The Rise of an Empire will be invading cinemas on March 7, 2014.
