Angelina-Jolie-as-Maleficent

When you think of songstress Lana Del Rey, “creepy” is probably not a word you’d think of next. That may all change after you see this new trailer for Disney’s Maleficent though.

Whereas the previous trailer was a hodge-podge of tones – thanks to footage of Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty animated feature film spliced into scenes from the new movie –  this new trailer is decidedly darker, thanks not only to the new visuals on display, but mainly due to the accompaniment of Ms Del Rey’s rather eerie rendition of classic Disney lullaby “Once Upon a Dream”.

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Once upon a dream? More like once upon a strangely psycho-sexual nightmare, am I right?! Angelina Jolie appears to be completely vamping it up in the witchy title role, and I ain’t complaining. I’m hoping that this is actually a truer reflection of the final film’s tone, as this type of dark fairy tale could be rather wonderful.

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville, and will be releasing on May 30, 2014.
