Seth Gordon could get UNCHARTED

Sony Pictures Entertainment is in negotiations with director Seth Gordon direct the live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted.

If you don’t know the name, Seth Gordon previously directed Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, so we might be looking out for Jason Bateman making an appearance (although, I sincerely hope not). To help out with his geek cred, Seth Gordon does have some gaming-related experience in the arcade documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Although many directors and scripts have been attached to the Uncharted project, the most recent being David O. Russel who left to helm the Oscar nominated American Hustle, if the deal with Seth Gordon goes ahead, we can look forward to casting news pretty soon.

If you’ve not played Uncharted, in which case shame on you, it follows the story of gaming’s masculine answer to Lara Croft, Nathan Drake, as he searches for the lost treasure of El Dorado with his will-they-won’t-they female sidekick Elena Fischer and mentor Victor Sullivan.

Video game to movie adaptations haven’t gone so well in the past. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single one that really excelled for me. But, that isn’t going to stop producers from trying, and by all means they shouldn’t stop trying. We’re bound to see a good adaptation eventually.

Producer Avi Arad stated a few months back that Uncharted would be the project most likely to be out the gate first. Arad, the producer behind Sam Raimi’s Spiderman and Blade, helped kick off the current craze of comic book adaptations that have gone from strength to strength at the box office, and has been looking to do the same for video game adaptations. Here’s hoping he knows what he’s doing.

They should just adapt the excellent mo-cap and script qualities of the games.
