Everything is indeed awesome for The Lego Movie. Three weeks in, and the movie has managed to remain lodged in the ankle of the North American box office, staying in top spot once again. By all accounts, The Lego Movie is some damn good fun, and considering the new arrivals hat were available, is a film without any real competition.

Here’s how nine other movies did on the weekend in the states.

Kevin Costner and an island getting the Krakatoa treatment were the latest releases this week, with both of those films failing to unseat the Lego Movie. 3 days to kill made $12.3 million and earned a number two spot, while Pompeii did a slow-motion 3D shuffle into third place with $10 million. Another Luc Besson produced movie, 3 days to kill is the most successful opening yet for a Eurocorp film, but not by much as it edged out past flops such as The Family and From Paris with love.

Carrying on with marginal improvements but still managing to be a flop, Paul WS Anderson’s Pompeii barely cleared $10 million at the box office. It’s at least a little bit better than his last non-Resident Evil movie, The Three Musketeers, which opened with $8.7 million. But it’s a far cry from his zombie action films, which usually score at least $30 million on opening. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • The Lego Movie – $31.4 Million
  • 3 days t0 kill – $12.3 Million
  • Pompeii – $10 Million
  • Robocop – $9.4 Million
  • The Monument’s Men – $8.1 Million
  • About Last Night – $7.4 Million
  • Ride Along – $4.6 Million
  • Frozen – $4.35 million
  • Endless Love – $4.3 Million
  • Winter’s Tale – $2.1Million

Top ten departures this week include Lone Survivor and That Awkward Moment. Peter Berg’s action flick made over $121 million at the box office off of a $40 million budget, while That Awkward Moment made just over $24 million from an $8 million budget. Hiyao Miyazaki’s final anime film, The Wind Rises, released in English in just over 21 cinemas, and banked a modest $301 000 over the weekend.

  1. Would people please just stop giving Mr Paul W.S. Anderson money to make movies. I enjoy the Resident Evil movies as a guilty pleasure but someone has to stop this guy before he decides to ruin another video game, Aliens or Predator franchise.

Just be lucky that this is not just another slow-mo “look at how hot my wife is” bragfest.
