Karl Urban confirms "conversations" about a DREDD sequel

We have a whole mega-city worth of love around here for gritty comic book adaptation Dredd, and apparently the rest of you guys do too. I say apparently, because while many professed their love for the film, it just scraped by on recouping its budget. This unfortunately meant that the chances of seeing a sequel was pretty slim, but according to star Karl Urban those chances just got a bit better.

Urban had previously mentioned that there was a tiny possibility that we may see more of his Judge Joe Dredd on screen, but that had always sounded more like wishful thinking than anything else. But while speaking at the Destination Star Trek convention in Frankfurt, Germany (via WhatCulture), Urban revealed that “‘conversations’ are taking place between the studio, the director and writer Alex Garland”. These conversations were apparently prompted by the film’s home release sales figures which has been very solid despite its lackluster box office performance, turning the film into a bit of a cult hit, and Lionsgate has apparently noticed this.

Now it should be noted that “conversations” doesn’t mean that anything is actually happening, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. There are so many horrid adaptations of beloved stories out there, that an adaptation that actually turned out to not only be exceptionally faithful but also just plain good, deserves a lot more love. Also, there are far too few movies out there where the heroes declare that they are the law before not taking their helmets off!

But planning ahead means I can’t claim not to have a problem.
