When it comes to confirmed stories, Star Wars: Episode VII can be found on the tail end of a scale from 1 to Loch Ness Monster. Director/co-writer JJ Abrams is being even more secretive than normal (and that’s saying a lot) but we may just have got our very first bit of verifiable casting news, as it looks like a certain Girls star is about to don the black hat (or is that helmet?) for the film.

According to a new report from Variety, Adam Driver is currently in talks with Lucasfilmto play the highly anticipated film’s main villain. There are no real details given about the role, except that it would be very Darth Vader-esque, meaning that he would probably be a Sith Lord.

It does look like this will be a recurring role though, as apparently Lucasfilm delayed making the decision due to Driver’s commitment to shooting the next two seasons of Lena Dunham’s acclaimed HBO comedy, Girls, which may interfere with future franchise installments’ shooting schedules. Those scheduling issues have apparently now been resolved, and an official deal is expected to be signed in the next few days.

This is apparently also the role that Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving were once rumoured for, although it looks like there has been such a massive script change after Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan recently turned in their draft of the screenplay, that just about any previous rumours can get tossed in the trash compactor now.

Now Driver does not look like what you might call traditional leading man material, but he must be doing something right as his name keeps popping up in connection with several major blockbusters, even including Batman Vs Superman. His unconventional looks aside though, he is a very talented young actor and could make for a pretty compelling villain. As to the identity of said villain, I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that he may be some secret apprentice of Vader’s. This is a pure thumb-suck though, so don’t hold me to it.
