I could easily live with an Independence Day sequel not starring Will Smith, as I doubt that the world is ready for a movie that stars the Captain Hiller air brigade squadron that happens to be made up of his entire family. One cast member that I do consider essential however?

Jeff Goldblum as computer genius David Levinson. And fortuantely, he’ll be bringing the full might of Windows 95 operating systems back with him in at least one movie sequel.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Goldblum was asked on whether or not we’d see his rock star scientist Carl Malcolm return to the Jurassic Park franchise. According to Goldblum, casting is already set in concrete for that film, and once again he won’t be a part of it, although he was happy having had a role in the first two films.

As for Independence Day 2 however, Goldblum confirmed that director Roland Emmirich was bringing back the hacker who took down the alien mothership in the original film:

Yeah, they’ve talked to me about it and I’ve talked to them about it and they’re excited and I’m anxious and eager to see — I haven’t read anything — what they cook up. You know, I think they’re trying to put it together.

Kickass. It’s a great time to be a child of the 1990s, now that these two films are getting the sequel treatment. Hopefully, there’ll be some more news on them as the year rolls by.
