80th Academy Awards NYC Meet the Oscars Opening

Another year, another Academy Awards slamma Jamma that saw plenty of actors, directors and other crew members from Hollywood walk away with all manner of naked gold men prizes. The thing is not everyone who wins an Oscar deserves to do so more than the fellow sitting near them.

Sometimes the judges get it right but all too often they get it wrong as well. Here’s who we think got robbed on Sunday night of their well-deserved award.

Leo Oscar

The knee-jerk reaction to last night’s Oscars is the obvious “How does Leonardo DiCaprio still not have an Oscar?!” angle, but let’s be fair: It’s not that he was snubbed, but rather that he just happened to find himself in one seriously strong group of actors this year. Any other year, and he would have clinched it easy for his performance in Wolf of Wall Street, but instead he found himself up against the awesome, unstoppable power of the McConaissance.

So who really got snubbed?

That (dis)honour doesn’t actually belong to a person, but to a movie as a whole. Out of the 10 nominations that David O. Russell’s universally praised American Hustle received, it won a whopping zero awards. That’s right: zero, nada, zilch. And while it’s true that some of the categories it was up for was insanely close (see Best Actor), and thus could have gone either way, there were still a few that everybody thought was a shoe-in, like Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress, and the film’s production design and makeup (did you see all that fabulous hair?!).

But alas, in the end American Hustle got hustled out of all the gold last night.

Alfonso Cuaron, I’mma let you finish, but Iron Man 3 had the best special effects of all time! Of all time! It’s been said that the mark of some truly great special effects is to not even notice them as they play out. But to be honest, if you can notice some great visual effects and still be wowed, that’s an achievement in and of itself. And Iron Man 3 was filled with such moments. From the fact that Robert Downey Jr never wore an entire Mark 39 suit for the entire shoot, through to the final battle that saw the mother of all house party initiatives throw down with Extremis soldiers, the movie truly made the most of that big screen budget.

And as subtle as Gravity was with its special effects, I like mine in my face and filled with Stark technology.

Who got snubbed at the Academy Awards? Um… I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. There are plenty of people that must have gone home disappointed with the results, but that’s true of any year.

For example, I feel sorry for Leonardo di Caprio, obviously, but regardless of whether was his “turn” to win an Oscar or not, his was not the best performance in his category. Besides, as Kervyn so succinctly pointed out, he doesn’t have time to cry because he’s too busy banging supermodels.  I feel sorry for anyone that went up against Gravity in any of the technical awards because there was no way they were going to take home an Oscar while competing against that powerhouse. I feel sorry for everyone else in the Animated Feature Film category as well, going up against Disney’s best animated movie to date, but I am just so happy that Frozen won.

At the end of the day, pretty much all the nominees that I thought were going to win, or hoped would win, did. And I’m happy with that.

I don’t watch the Oscars. I never have. It’s not as if an Oscar really makes you want to watch a film. And, bar technical awards, it’s not some showcase of the industry’s finest talent. If that was true, then how come neither Steve Buscemi nor Gary Oldman ever got a nomination? Terry Gilliam only had one nom – for writing the Brazil screenplay. That’s like thanking Leonardo da Vinci for his colour sorting talents.

And when last did you see a foreign film in the Best Picture category? Since 1990 there has been one all-out foreign language movie and a meagre selection of dual-language film. Most chosen are also predominantly American, with a smattering of British titles. Why is it that epics like Red Cliff, Run Lola Run and City Of Lost Children never got a single Oscar nom for ANYTHING?

It’s because the Oscars represent a narrow group within the film industry, yet we treat it like it’s the Olympics. What looks like a global event is really the equivalent a professional wrestling roster, where the rest of the world is represented by one guy and his bad accent. At least the Olympics have some level of representation, not just Harvey Weinstein and his campaigning adversaries.

To be honest, I don’t care that much. If they did suddenly nominate, say, Alan Rickman for something (yes, never been), I still wouldn’t watch. To spend three or something hours listening to back-patting speeches and industry jokes – well, I just have better uses for my time, like watching a movie. Who cares if someone hits on Jennifer Lawrence again? There will be animated GIFs for that.

Ahh, the Oscars, the red carpet, actors and actresses wearing clothes that cost more than most 3rd world nations GDPs, and we love it because they are all beautiful. Of course every year some are MORE beautiful in the objective and totally unbiased eyes of the Academy’s judges. The big talk this year is how poor ol’ Leo was robbed of Best Actor, something I don’t agree with at all.

Kervyn said in his finite wisdom above, Leo was just out acted again. Come on, the ‘true life’ story of someone suffering from AIDS vs. a Playboy Wall Street Market is a slam dunk, as was Matthew McConaughey’s performance. I have always said that tragic biopics win hands down vs. almost any other genre. I was sad that American Hustle received nothing though. The make-up was fantastic, I mean to have Christian Bale pull off a ‘Tom cruise’ in Tropic Thunder of sorts blew me away.

To be nominated for so much and to walk away with nothing but an Oscar party hangover leaves a pretty bad taste in the mouth. I also would have loved to have seen Sandra Bullock win Best Actress. I thought her performance, not to mention what she had to physically go through, deserved it. And she had to work with Alfonso, no one should have to go through that and not win anything. So in my opinion the 2014 Oscars were uneventful. Don’t get me wrong we had some amazing movies and some special effects that were literally out of this world but other than Leo’s expected disappointment I think it was pretty uneventful, which is a good thing, I think.

Adults who play play play for fantasy are the most powerful people on the planet.

It just proves that Adults are nothing more than big children. Some need sleep as they do tend to start world wars from their grumpy tantrums… me included.

Oscars, the one who can play play the best wins. Normally that funny kid who likes wearing white face make up.

The only real adult at the Oscars was the Pizza delivery boy.

I think watching a movie like One Flew over, Shutter Island, etc shows that some of these people are more than just play play. They entertain, which is needed to stop feeling the world sucks too much. Least you forget the number of comedians and actresses that entertain the troops when they are serving.

True, but I think it is more of the pomp and circumstance that makes me cringe. Not to mention the blind following.

They had to order Pizza to make a point that they are not GODS but your average artisan.

Its us that Worship these false Idols. People care more about the colour of Justin Biebers piss than some civil war over chicken Kiev 😛

I can’t stand the celeb worship either. They’re actors, their job is pretending to be someone else. The guy curing cancer is a nobody.

Who? But yeah, agreed. I get that humans always need to ‘
aspire’ to something but I think in America it really has gotten out of hand.

Oh, I see what you mean. Ya, I agree, the adulation sickens me too. Tough I think a great many actors and actresses also hate it too. Just look at the way the pretend to laugh (and don’t do a very good job of it) when the presenters rip into them. I do think what they do is difficult, but I hate the way we treat them better than doctors and teachers out there.
