Midweek Mouth-off: Do the Oscars matter?

So this year’s Academy Awards was evidently the best watched in a decade. But today we want to hear what you think about the Oscars in general. Do you think they still matter, if they ever did? Apart from the red carpet watching, do you think the awards ceremony has any impact on the average movie-goer? Does it make you aware of and/or inspire you to seek out certain films – or is it utterly irrelevant to your usual movie diet?

I think it does bring attention to movies, as much as I am loath to defend it I will in an ‘advertising’ manner. If one only watched Oscar movies you would mostly see good movies (not always, mostly). As far as the pomp and ceremony are concerned I couldn’t give a stuff. I know people like to ‘look up’ to stars to numb their pathetic lives but watching the crème-de-le-crème masturbate each others egos makes me want to murder puppies.

I don’t care one whit about the Oscars. Don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie purely because it won awards. I generally watch movies based on their premise, whether it’s got some decent actors & how much enjoyment I think I’ll get from it.

its not about us, its about them and their peers acknowledging their achievements within their own field.
the only reason its such a big deal is because we made it so.

it shouldnt affect movie goers, the awards reflect the achievements. our views and oppinions should form a part of those achievements.
