Swords, sandals, time travel and talking dogs were on the menu over the weekend, as the American box office welcomed the latest 300 film and an animated flick starring a pair of cult icons. Of course, only one could win. And that result was rather obvious.

AHOO! AHOO! TONIGHT WE DINE ON BOX OFFICE TRIUMPHS! I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I’M SHOUTING BUT IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE THE 300 SPIN-OFF MOVIE DID VERY WELL! Rise of an Empire made $45 million over the weekend, which while certainly not bad, isn’t anywhere near the original movie which made over $70 million on opening in 2007. And that’s without adjusting for inflation. Still, it’s a solid start, and far better than recent sword and sandal epics such as The Legend of Hercules.

Kiddy flick Mr Peabody and Sherman arrived just in time to take advantage of the waning Frozen goodwill, clocking in at second place with $32.5 million. That’s still far behind the opening of the Disney winter juggernaut, which has now made over $1 billion worldwide. Expect Mr Peabody and Sherman to at least cross the $200 million threshold at this rate, and make double that when worldwide figures are taking into account.

  • 300: Rise of an Empire – $45 Million
  • Mr Peabody and Sherman – $32.5 Million
  • Non-stop – $15.3 Million
  • The Lego Movie – $11 Million
  • Son of God – $10 Million
  • The Monument’s Men – $3.1 Million
  • 3 days to kill – $3.06 Million
  • Frozen – $3.01 Million
  • 12 years a slave – $2.1 Million
  • Ride along – $2 Million

Top ten departures this week include About Last Night and Robocop. A mixed reception resulted in middling sales for this film, as the $100 million budget resulted in only $190 million being made worldwide. Perhaps DVD sales can pick those prime directives up when the film arrives on the home media market.

Wait, Frozen is still on there? How long is that now? And how much $ has it brought in?

So far, it’s been a 16 week run. I expect it to drop from the top ten around week 17/18.
