While some may disagree, in my opinion Marvel Studios has never made a bad pic. Everyone has their least favourite Marvel movie (In my case, Thor) but even those are generally still decent, while Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is almost universally accepted as the high benchmark. And it would seem that the next entry into the Marvel Universe, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is not just settling for “decent”. In fact, if early Twitter reactions are to be believed, it may just be kicking Mr Whedon’s team-up movie off the throne.
Last night, Marvel held the first press screening of the film in Los Angeles, and while full reviews are still a no-no thanks to some press embargoes until March 20, the lucky folk in attendance were free to tweet their reactions to the film. And boy, did they ever react. Looks like all the fangasms we’ve had over the amazing trailers, kickass clips and gorgeous concept art were all justified.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER: Phase 2 is 3/3 for me. Anthony Mackie has finally found that breakthrough role.

The CAPTAIN AMERICA sequel blew me away. Movie has a fantastic script, amazing action, and great character moments. Just about perfect.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is just phenomenal, in so many ways. Believe the hype, and prepare for so much more! — Brian Gallagher (@GallagherMW) March 11, 2014
Marvel Studios gets Captain America better than any of their other heroes. THE WINTER SOLDIER is terrific. — Jeremy Smith (@mrbeaks) March 11, 2014
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is Marvel’s best movie to date. You thought the trailers were great? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is absolutely incredible. Best action in a Marvel solo movie and perhaps the best of them all – around.

Wow. Captain America: TWS is great. One of the best action films I’ve seen in ages, maybe ever. You want to see this. #CaptainAmericaEvent — Matt Blum (@cerebus19) March 11, 2014

Really liked Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Proves Joss isn’t only 1 in Marvel’s arsenal who can craft a compelling/fresh female char

Just about the only negative reaction I could find came from Slashfilm’s Germaine Lussier, and even then, it’s actually more “only slightly negative-ish, but still awesome” than anything truly bad.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is awesome. A tad too long, a tad too plotty, but its action & MCU impact will blow your damn mind.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) March 11, 2014
As normally is the case with these things, these are heat of the moment, walking out of the cinema with the adrenalin still roaring through your bloodstream kinds of reactions, so you can probably expect final reviews to be a tad more tempered as folks sit down to properly chew on what they saw. Even so, based on how overwhelmingly positive these are, I don’t expect these opinions to sway too much at this point, which means that we may have just found the new kings of the Marvel Universe, and new Hollywood superstars in the making, in co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits our shores in two weeks time on March 28, but I’ll get to see it two days earlier (Nah-nah-nahnaah-nah!), and will definitely let you guys know if I find my mind blown as well.
After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

Like I said, some people may disagree with me. I understand that the Marvel style of filmmaking (and they really have developed their very own signature feel) is not for everybody, but I enjoy it.
As for Iron Man 2, I’d love to make some impassioned speech defending the film, and how it’s biggest problem was just that it was more an Avengers trailer than a standalone film, and that it still had some redeeming value in it’s action sequences and Downey’s performance as Stark. But honestly, I just forgot about it. 😀

I’m one of the few that preferred Iron Man 2 to the first one. There were so many more comic reference in there, it was more a fan service film than anything else. I know many people rate their Marvel movies differently to me, but after watching them all again in a binge session, My favourites go: Avengers, Thor, IronMan2, Hulk, Captain America, IronMan1, Thor2, IronMan3. Having that list made me realize two things: Even the worst MCU movie on my list I loved, and I’m an even bigger Marvel fanboy than I originally thought.
