Plenty of new releases this week, but only one movie could come out on top. And oh leeeerrrd, I wasn’t expecting this result.Bouncing back from a lukewarm opening, Mr Peabody and Sherman took advantage of a soft weekend to usurp the number one position previously held by 300: Rise of an Empire. Racing into third place, was the latest video game adaptation and rolling advert for car pornography, Need for Speed. Clocking in at $17.8 million, Need for Speed doesn’t look like it lives life a quarter of a mile at a time.

Debuting in fifth place, Tyler Perry’s The Single Mom’s Club made just over $8 million. Veronica Mars also returned, making an impressive $2 million from a very limited run of only 291 cinemas in North America. Expect the cult hit series to easily recoup it’s budget once it’s done and the film heads to home release. Here’s how everyone else did over the weekend:

  • Mr. Peabody & Sherman – $21.2 Million
  • 300: Rise of An Empire – $19.1 Million
  • Need for Speed – $17.8 Million
  • Non-Stop – $10.6 Million
  • Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club – $8.3 Million
  • The LEGO Movie – $7.7 Million
  • Son of God – $5.4 Million
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – $3.6 Million
  • Frozen – $2.1 Million
  • Veronica Mars – $2 Million

Plenty of top ten departurs this week, in order to make space for all those new films. Kevin Costner’s 3 Days To kill bowed out after four weeks with a global take of $28.4 million. Ride Along finished up a successful run for Kevin Hart, netting the comedian an international haul of $142 million off of a $25 million budget. Last but certainly not least, director George Clooney’s World War Two epic The Monument’s Men finished up after six weeks, with $127 million worldwide.
