With the recent wrap-up of True Detective‘s spectacular first season, I’m left with one gigantic itch that needs some scratching (No, not that kind of itch). Yes, we’ll soon see the return of major TV players like Game of Thrones and Orphan Black, but I’m looking for that weird, slightly off-kilter little something with the Hollywood A-list acting/directing and producing to replace my Marty and Rust TV fix. And it looks like that’s exactly what I’ll be getting in FX’s TV adaptation of Joel and Ethan Coen’s Fargo. You betcha!

A drifter named Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) arrives in small-town Minnesota and influences the population with his malice and violence, including put-upon insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman).

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this is not a straight adaptation of the Coen’s 1996 Oscar winning hit, but rather more of a case of “inspired by” with a mix of “set in the same world of”. So no, nobody’s getting fed into wood chippers here. Maybe. Probably. Because judging from the wickedly dark tone in this trailer, it would be a fair assumption – especially since the Coens are also producing – to see the same kind of messed up shenanigans we had in the movie.

The show is intended to be a 10-episode limited series, which is a TV format that has quickly become my favourite as the shorter production time/higher budget attracts all kinds of big acting talents, as is the case here with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman. And speaking of Freeman, how do you like that darn tootin’ accent? That’s definitely not from the Shire!

Fargo also stars Alison Tolman, Colin Hanks, Kate Walsh, Bob Odenkirk and Oliver Platt, and is set to debut on FX on April 15, 2014.
