These AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON set pics give first look at Ultron, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and more!

They’ve already Hulk smashed downtown Jozi (still not sure I can spot a difference), and now The Avengers: Age of Ultron continues its production world tour over in Italy. Unlike those Hulk-less local pics though, we won’t have to imagine what our heroes/villains will look with these newly released on-set snaps, as these give us a very clear look at a battle being fought between Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and, yes, the man of the moment (and title) himself, Ultron. Well, kinda.

Yes, look past the thick bomber jacket, jeans and black boots, and that is actually Ultron. Clearly, a pre-CGI Ultron, of course, who may or may not actually be James Spader, but it’s definitely Ultron. And I like it. From what you can see on the actual robot parts, it’s a pretty good interpretation of Ultron, keeping elements of the classic look, while tweaking a few things here and there. Of course, we’re going to have to wait till the film is further along in production before we can get a proper look, but at least this clears up whether or not Spader would be using mo-cap and just providing a voice to Ultron, or actually playing the character in-costume.

Now the next observation to make is that Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver costume, while still miles better than that begoggled, disco jacket wearing guy over in X-Men: Days of Future Past, doesn’t look all that good here. Very bland, basically. However, they’re probably going to spice up his look a bit with some CGI (not to mention on-set lighting often throws off the look of these things, just look at Captain America’s costume in The Avengers), and director Joss Whedon and co have indicated that they will be using some nifty filming techniques to show off his super-speed.

Most importantly though, Elizabeth Olsen spoke last year about wearing the Scarlet Witch costume, which included the funky headgear from the comics, none of which is present here. Now we know that the film opens with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as baddies working for Baron Von Strucker who get captured by the Avengers and then flip-flop over to the good side. I’m fairly confident that this is that very same battle for their capture (see Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch clearly showing bad intentions towards each other) with the Italian backdrop and the guys in mo-cap suits doubling as Von Strucker’s castle and lackeys, respectively. With that being said, I’m about 90% sure that what they’re wearing is not their proper costumes, which they will get when they join the team later.

The Avengers was about as perfect a comic book superhero movie as we’ve ever seen, and with the bar raised that high, Whedon, Kevin Feige and the rest of the guys at Marvel have their work cut out for them to try and deliver something as good, if not better. And with The Avengers: Age of Ultron expanding the cast and scope, it just means that there now even more things that can go wrong. But as I’ve often said over the last few years: In Whedon, we trust.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Thomas Kretschmann and James Spader, and will be assembling in theaters on May 1, 2015.

  1. The more I read about this movie, the more excited I’m getting… and I’m not even a Marvel comics fan. Sweet mercy!

Imagine if Scarlett Johannsen played the Scarlet Witch? My mind would have been blown… but alas…
