Ladies, get your dollar bills ready for a really big MAGIC MIKE sequel

I’m just going to give you a minute to stop screaming shrilly from excitement at reading that headline…

…Okay, you all done now, Darryn? Good. As I was about to say, after seeing a veritable mountain of dollar bills stuffed into the box office g-string of director Steven Soderbergh and star Channing Tatum’s male stripper sorta-biographical dramedy, Magic Mike, there was always talk about the possibility of a sequel. Soderbergh’s decision to hang up his feature film directing hat shifted that talk, so that at one stage Tatum was considering being the director behind the camera as well gyrating in a shirtless collar and tie in front of it.

According to Indiewire though, that won’t be the case, as Greg Jacobs has been tapped to helm the film, which has officially been given the enlarged title of Magic Mike XXL. While Jacobs’ name probably doesn’t ring any immediate bells, I can say with almost unwavering certainty that many of you have actually seen his work before. Going back to 1993’s King of the Hill, Jacobs has actually been Soderbergh’s First Assistant Director on just about every single one of the Oscar winning director’s movies, which means that he can probably do a pretty mean Soderbergh directing impersonation.

Though I get the feeling that a lot of the audience for this movie won’t be caring one iota about maintaining directing cohesion between the films. For these people, I have the news that while not officially confirmed, all the principal cast (read: all those guys with the rippling pecs and abs and aversion to clothing) are expected to be back, including recent Best Actor Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. Joe Manganiello, who played Big Dick Richie (named thusly for obvious reasons) in the first film, has already confirmed his return, as well as the fact that the film is scheduled to start shooting some time in the third quarter of this year.

As to what the film would be about, we’ve got no firm idea yet, though it has been previously mentioned that it will be a road movie. The original is partially based on Tatum’s own true life experiences as a male stripper before he became a big time movie star, and according to what Soderbergh told PrideSource last year, the film will probably be about some more of Tatum’s stripper past that just didn’t make it into the first film.

“There were some stories and events that Channing lived through that we just couldn’t fit in the first one. One of them is a really hilarious and very cinematic idea that we reluctantly didn’t put in the first film, because it was such a big idea you could build a whole film out of it – but we didn’t want to build that film out of it. It’s perfect for this, though.”

Despite all the dude-ity, I enjoyed Magic Mike for it’s surprising maturity in places and clever wit, as well as helping to kickstart the McConaissance that’s still continuing today. Also, Olivia Munn. As such, I would actually like to see a sequel getting made, and if most of the band is back together again, that would be great.
