What do you get when you throw the alter ego of a giant green rage monster, and a swashbuckling pirate queen together? Well, surprisingly, nowhere near as much property damage as you might think. In fact, the results are kind of cute.

I am of course yakking on about Begin Again (formerly titled Can a Song Save Your Life?), the new musical romantic comedy from writer/director from John Carney, about two down and out musos (Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley) who start collaborating professionally, and end up collaborating romantically. Carney is of course also the writer/director behind Once, the popular romantic comedy turned Broadway musical about two down and out musos who start collaborating professionally, and end up collaborating romantically. Hey, go with what you know, I guess.

Either way, Ruffalo and Knightley, when they’re not respectively Hulk smashing Manhattan or raiding the Caribbean, can be quite charming in these types of “pick yourself up” everyman/woman roles. As long as Carney keeps the schmaltz to a minimum and keeps the songs to a maximum (Knightley already seems to acquit herself quite well), then he may just have another hit on his hands.

Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

Begin Again also stars stars Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, Catherine Keener and James Corden, and will performing on stage on July 4, 2014.
