There was only one new release over the weekend at the North American box office, in the form of the super soldier sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Obviously, this film was going to take the number one spot. But just how well did it do exactly?

Ridicutacular, that’s how. Grossing $96 million on its opening weekend, that puts Captain America 2 ahead of the first movie by one hell of a margin. Captain America: The First Avenger only had a  $65.2 million debut back in 2o11. Compared to other Marvel movies, that puts it ahead of Thor: The Dark World‘s $85.7 million weekend, but behind current box office kingpin Iron Man 3 which still dominates with $174.1 million. If current trends continue, expect this well received sequel to also finish up with close to a billion dollars in the bank, which would make parent company Disney slightly richer. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $96.2 Million
  • Noah – $17 Million
  • Divergent – $13 Million
  • God’s not dead – $7.7 Million
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – $6.3 Million
  • Muppets: Most Wanted – $6.2 Million
  • Mr Peabody and Sherman – $5.3 Million
  • Sabotage – $1.9 Million
  • Need For Speed – $1.83 Million
  • Non-Stop – $1.82 Million

Top ten departures this week are limited to one casualty. 300: Rise of an Empire bows out after a five week run with a global haul of $317.1 million. In comparison to the original 300‘s take of $456 million in 2007, that’s a clear drop in estimated profits. But off of a $110 million budget, there’s still plenty of room for profit. A-HOO!

Sad that the way inferior Iron Man 3 did better revenue than the amazeballs Captain America 2.
