Get ready to do the truffle shuffle, because one of the most iconic and seminal films from the 80’s could soon be heading back to the big screen for another go around, as according to original director Richard Donner, he is currently involved in putting together a sequel to The Goonies.

There have been rumours and hints at doing a Goonies sequel for the last 20 years now already, but besides for The Goonies II video game released for the NES in 1986, nothing actually materialized on screen. But recently, celebrity gossip site TMZ cornered Donner and proceeded to ask him various questions about his film projects, and during it all the director revealed that “we’re doing a sequel” for The Goonies.

The original film, directed by Donner, penned by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg, was an ineffably charming adventure story that not only made a huge impact on many a now-not-so-young fan’s childhood, but also helped to launch the careers of a few actors you would probably recognize from some Hollywood blockbusters today. And when Donner was asked about just which of these cast members would be asked to return for this sequel, the director responded “Hopefully all of them!”

“All of them” would include Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen. Somehow I get the feeling that the last three names on that list will definitely be up for doing this, while the first two will be the clincher, especially in Brolin’s case. I would be guessing though that these now adult actors would also not be the central cast, maybe just playing either a supporting role or cameo, while a new younger generation of kids from the “Goon Docks” would go on a brand new adventure together.

I personally haven’t seen The Goonies  in ages, but I have heard from many who have recently revisited it, that some parts of it hasn’t aged as well as you would have liked, but there is still a timelessness to the story, that I’m hoping can be captured again. The fact that Donner is back at the helm already gives me the tiniest sliver of hope that this can actually be done right. The moment they cast Megan Fox though, I’m boycotting this sucker.

  1. I watched it as a kid, it’s not something I’ve ever wanted to revisit.

Really? You’re one of a few – this has long been a huge classic.

I think it’s aged very well, but you have to keep in mind that it is a very Eighties movie. As for a sequel, I’m not sure they can recapture the magic after all of these years. But it could be fun if they spend even more time in tunnels and among pirate traps.
