  • Rihanna will be stepping out from underneath her pop diva umber-ellah (ellah ellah ey ey) to provide the voice of the lead character, Tip, in Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming animated comedy, Home. What makes this role notable, is that this will be the first animated 3D film to feature a black lead character. The Caribbean songstress joins the already cast Jim Parsons, Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin who will all be lending their voices. The film is an adaptation of Adam Rex’s 2007 children’s book “The True Meaning of Smekday”. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while the Boov get busy efficiently reorganising the planet.

But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov by the name of Oh (Jim Parsons). Equally stubborn and set in their ways, these two fugitives realise there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime. Good thing they have a flying car.

  • Unless you’ve recently become an utter luddite and think social media is when your commune gathers around and draws pictures of each other, you’ve probably heard that English Premiere League Football club Manchester United has recently fired manager David Moyes, after the Scotsman took the team from league kings to league jesters in just 10 months. Why are we talking about football here, a sport that Darryn still has no clue about? Well, because it inspired Empire to create this very entertaining list of the 10 Best Scenes in Movies of People Getting Fired.

  • As part of Batman’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, Warner Bros\DC have unveiled this kick-ass new Batman Beyond short film by none other than Darwyn Cooke, the acclaimed comic book artist famous for his version of the Justice League, as well the man who did the opening title sequence of the 1990’s Batman: The Animated Series.

  • Like Abbot and Costello but only with lots more CGI explosions, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have been working together for a long time as writing partners on some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters of the last few years. However, that partnership is now coming to an end. With Kurtzman tapped by Sony for his sophomore directorial effort on Venom, that leaves Orci all alone. So what does he want to do to keep busy? Apparently, the screenwriter doesn’t just also want to try his hand at directing, but he wants to direct the next Star Trek film.

Attack the Block‘s Joe Cornish’s name had been thrown around a bit as a replacement to JJ Abrams, who has played sci-fi franchise musical chairs to direct the next Star Wars, but you have to think that with Orci also co-writing the pic, that he would be in with a shot. His lack of directorial experience might give Paramount room for pause though, especially on a tentpole feature of this size.

  • So about that Goonies sequel… If you’re a fan of the 1980’s classic film who find yourself a bit worried that director Richard Donner and co would it mess up, then you may take some solace in the fact that that “and co” part apparently includes Steven Spielberg. Spielberg produced the first film as well provided the story idea, and it looks like it’s his idea that got this sequel ball rolling again, as Donner told TMZ.

“Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don’t do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.”

  • Looks like there won’t be much saving of the cheerleaders happening in the new Heroes reboot, Heroes Reborn. Nor should you expect any of the original cast to be popping up again. That’s a pretty fair assumption seeing as Hayden Panettiere, who played invincible cheerleader Claire Bennet in the original super-powered show, apparently had to find out about the new show just like most of us.

“Well, it was a shock to me. In fact, I believe I became privy to that through my cousin. She sent me a text message and told me about it, and, I mean, we had nothing, nothing to do with it; it will definitely be interesting to see how they reinvent that… I think it’s a whole new set of characters. Who knows? It’s a little bit of an interesting feeling because you go, ‘That was our show, our home, our family,’ something that we had a major part in creating as well, and, I mean, I hope that they don’t have somebody else playing our characters, that would be a little dagger in the heart. But, you never know. I wish them success in it, for sure.”

  • Know who wasn’t happy with Transformers 3: Revenge of the Fallen? I mean other than me and most of Rotten Tomatoes. None other than the film’s director, Michael Bay. On a movie franchise like Transformers, where explosions often trump logic, that may not be so surprising. But did you know that far more acclaimed and legendary filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock also looked down on their own work? You can read up more on Mental Floss’ list of 12 Directors Who Hated Their Own Movies.
  • While we already know what word is used the most in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street (clue: it rhymes with duck) , apparently using all the wrong words makes it even more entertaining.
