Takashi Miike wants to make a vampire movie? Now that is a damn good idea. If you ever plan to fake your way through a conversation about Japanese movies, it helps to know something about the infamous director. As the maker of such cult shock classics as Ichi The Killer, Visitor Q and Audition, Miike is a monument of shock cinema. But true to being a Japanese director, he also couldn’t stay away from Yakuza movies and has created classics such as Dead Or Alive and even the strange adaptation of the video game Yakuza. So if he plans to combine the two, who would argue?

Miike has revealed his next project to be Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld. According to a statement, it will be about a Yakuza boss who survives many brushes with death. It turns out he’s a vampire and when the boss gets vanquished, he bites his top guy to turn vampiric and avenge his death. Said Miike:

“Take a hike, boring Japanese productions! Against everyone’s wishes, I’m going back to my roots on this one, and plan to go on a real rampage with Yakuza Apocalypse. I hope my cast and crew, and even myself make it out alive,”

That may sound like hyperbole, but there is no reason not to take Miike seriously, especially when he uses phrases like “real rampage”. This is a guy who concluded his breakthrough (tv) film by just blowing everything up.  We can brace ourselves for a truly over-the-top movie. The larger question is one of genre: vampires in Asian films are traditionally tied to different rules. Will Miike go that route, opt for Western influences or mix things up? Whatever the final product, you’ll never get it out of your head…
