Between Syfy and Johnny Depp, the world is yet to run out of bad movies. Unfortunately there is a shortage of things that make fun of cinema’s bombs. For many years that job fell to the crew of Mystery Science Theatre, where a man and his robot companions made endless fun of a bad movie while watching it. Even if the show doesn’t ring a bell, its iconic silhouette should…
MST3K was cancelled in 1999, but has been kept alive in the heart of fans and countless bootlegs on Youtube. The creators of the show have since moved on to, well, more movie riffing in the form of Cinematic Titanic, a collaboration of live shows, DVDs and other material. It’s good, but without the robots Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot things just aren’t the same.
That might just change. According to series creator Joel Hodgson, the peanut gallery of movie infamy could be heading online. Wired writes that the show might return this year in an online incarnation. Hodgson also told Wired:
I’ve talked to a bunch of fans about their lives and what MST3K means to them. I’m overwhelmed by how people took to that show. It really affected them. I thought, if enough people still love it, maybe we can bring it back.
Even avid viewers sometimes don’t realize that every major role in the show had been swapped out over time. So in my mind, the show is built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas. It’s like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle as it applies to MST3K: If it doesn’t change, it’s not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies.
So it may not be the same… well, anything, though fans would dearly like the robots to at least return. Taking it online is a great idea, especially with the kind of money popular online videos attract. But would it live up to such undisputed classics as Hobgoblins, Pumaman or Space Mutiny?

I used to love watching this on SciFy. When the channel still existed on DSTV.
