New Fantastic Four: Just add grit

Grit. It all comes down to grit these days. Batman has it, Superman has it, and now it looks like Josh Tranks’ highly anticipated and at times controversial reboot of the Fantastic Four will also have it. Producer Simon Kinberg has said the movie is going to be far more real and gritty “It’s a much more grounded, gritty, realistic movie than the last couple movies. If I had to say, the tone of it would be somewhere on the spectrum between Spider-Man and Chronicle.” Wow, that is a far remove from the last two movies (yes, THOSE, the ones that were critically panned and had many weeping). Spider-Man has certainly come back from the Tobey Maguire days to the point where I keep expecting to see old Spidey singing songs from the Cure or Placebo.

Trank has certainly chosen characters that are polar opposites to their predecessors to achieve this, to the point where people are raging about the casting of Michael B Jordan (an awesome black actor) as the Human Torch. Frankly I see nothing wrong with this (and probably need to change my address to avoid the die-hard fans out there). We also have a younger Mr Fantastic played by 27-year-old Miles Teller, a full CGI The Thing acted by none other than Billy Elliot’s Jamie Bell and lastly Kate Mara will be appearing as the Invisible Woman.

Kinberg goes on to say “Josh Trank’s instincts are to be as realistic and grounded and real with this stuff as possible. In many ways I would say it’s definitely more of a drama than comedy.”

So what do you think? Better to go grit than skit? I look forward to the movie which is expected to land on 18 June 2015.

  1. Highly anticipated by who, exactly?

The last two were, in my opinion, that bad. Killed off

I know many reviewers from here are, they trust Trank I suppose. Chronicles was also a cool movie.

Well, I’d much rather have “grit” over camp or childish.
