Vampires suck. And unfortunately, when it comes vampires on the big screen lately, “suck” isn’t meant as a verb. Because of this, cinematic nosferatu are prime comedy material, but alas, this usually ends up done embarrassingly poorly.

That looks set to change with What We Do In The Shadows, a new vampire mockumentary from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the guys behind Flight of the Conchords and Eagle vs Shark respectively. The two co-write, -direct and -star in the hilarious looking New Zealand based comedy, that eschews the topless, sparkly vampires for the more traditional undead of gothic lairs, ruffled shirts and… struggling to get pass nightclub bouncers?

Here’s the first trailer for you to check it out for yourself.

Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

“Werewolves, note swearwolves.” Ha ha ha.

What We Do In The Shadows also stars Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzales-Macuer, Stu Rutherford and Rhys Darby, and will be releasing in its native country on 12 June 2014. There are no further international release dates set yet.
