GODZILLA 2 is already in development

One of the things that I dug about the new Godzilla movie wasn’t that magnificent third act, impressive visual effects or a roar that could make your goosebumps emit atomic flames. It’s that as far as the narrative structure goes, this was a done in one movie. No lingering plot threads, no sly teasers hinting that Godzilla would return, just a story with a beginning, middle and end. Still, don’t rule out on not seeing Big G return, because a sequel is already being planned.

Godzilla (2)

Deadline reports that basic sequel development has begun, thanks to the current box office success of the film. Director Gareth Edwards will most likely get offered a chance to return for a sequel, as Legendary Pictures Thomas Tull said to Collider a while back a sequel obviously depended on the numbers that the film pulled in:

I know you don’t talk about sequels and I’m not even going to ask you about it.  What I am going to ask though is…the movie cost around 160.  I know there’s a lot of marketing costs, is there a magic number at Legendary that you are like, “We need to hit this number and everyone’s going to be very happy”?

THOMAS TULL: You know…

I like putting you on the spot like that.

TULL: Yeah, I know you do.  Look, I think for us if the movie does- I’d really like for it to at least have a four in front of it globally, and if it does that we’re in a good position.

So basically over five and six we’re talking about the S-word, or could be.

TULL: We love this universe, we love Godzilla, and if we’re fortunate enough to have a high class problem we’ll deal with it then.

Last year, Edwards already spoke about the idea of a sequel, mentioning that he’d love to have an homage to Destroy All Monsters on the big scree which would feature the Godzilla stomping ground of Monster Island:

“With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.”

I’m expecting Godzilla to easily clear the $500 million mark before it exits the top ten, as the film is just that damn good. And while I dig the idea of a trip to Monster Island, bear in mind that Legendary also has Pacific Rim under their belt, with Guillermo Del Toro saying that he’d love to cross universes with the two movies and pit the mechs against the Kaiju. An unlikely crossover, but a man can dream.

We’re going to need a bigger Jaeger…
