As if there was any doubt, the king of monsters returned to become the king of the box office in North America over the weekend. A new Godzilla flick came in hard and fast, followed hot on its heels by a sports drama that didn’t have the benefit of a massive marketing campaign or a skyscraper-sized atomic lizard. Naturally, Godzilla was going to take the crown that weekend.

Destroying all competition with a blistering opening weekend take in the states of $93.2 million, Godzilla is now the film with one of the biggest debuts of the year. It’s just slightly behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million) and way ahead of the 1998 remake that made $44 million on opening. Out of the various summer blockbusters over the last couple of years, Godzilla also beat Star Trek Into Darkness ($70.1 million), Pacific Rim ($37.2 million) and World War Z ($66.4 million).

Million Dollar Arm on the other hand, failed to pitch a winning ball. The sports drama notched up a paltry $10.5 million on debut. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend.

  • Godzilla – $93.2 Million
  • Neighbors – $25.9 Million
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $16.8 Million
  • Million Dollar Arm – $10.5 Million
  • The Other Woman – $6.3 Million
  • Heaven is for real – $4.4 Million
  • Rio 2 – $3.8 Million
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier  – $3.7 Million
  • Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return – $1.95 Million
  • Mom’s Night Out – $1.9 Million

Top ten departures this week include Divergent and Brick Mansions. Divergent made $285 million worldwide, which is most likely not the Young Adult cash that LionsGate/Summit was hoping for, but it’s not a bust either after a nine week run. Brick Mansions may be one of the final movies to ever star Paul Walker, but you can bet that this turkey won’t be popping up on any best of DVD collections in the future. Barely hanging on for four weeks, the flick bowed out of the top ten with a paltry global take of just over $31.4 million.

  1. The fact that Neighbors still pulled in a respectable $25.9 mil on its second week, up against Godzilla, is bloody impressive.
